Needs by position, how would you address?

Recommended Posts

So I hear a few different takes on the Carolina Panthers positional needs. I am sure this is because we do not know what FA we are going to be able to resign. But a few of them are listed below:

PFT says:

DT

QB

CB

DE

TE

OG

DB says:

QB

WR

TE

DT

DE

OLB

USA T:

QB

DT

WR

CB

What do you personally think we need to address and with which of our picks should be address it. Lets assume D-will, CJ, Anderson, Davis are back, SS and Marshall are gone traded for 2012 picks/released, we have:

1st

3rd

3rd (supp)

4th

5th

6th

6th (supp)

7th (supp)

How do you approach it. (I know, BPA... but lets go best case scenario here)

In all honesty, we don't need any more young players on this team at most of those positions. After the 1st round, most draft picks are developmental in design. Teams get lucky all the time but no one goes into a draft expecting to have their 2nd or 6th round pick start. Or at least they shouldn't be doing that.

We need some vetern (yet young) experience infused into this team. So for me, ideally, I would draft some OL (one of the only positions where we still have age on this team) and kicker. LB and TE are positions we could use some new young faces.

IMO DT, QB, CB and WR you only address out of need in the 1st round, and hopefully they can start this season. The rest of the draft you draft BPA with an eye out for OL, LB and TE. Then through FA you address the three positions you didn't address in the 1st round. And I do think this is the offseason you find you new kicker. Delhomme is gone, so is Hoover and Moose. Peppers jeted. And now Smith is on his way out. If there is ever a time to go ahead and just make a clean sweep its now.

Best case scenario for me would be this....and like I said this is best case so it's very optimistic.....

QB: McNabb gets released by Wash and we sign him, draft Tyrod Taylor in the sixth and let him sit and learn.

DB: Buffalo wants Cam and feels like we will take him #1 overall so we move down to 3 and pick up their second rounder. Draft Patrick Peterson #3 overall.

WR: We draft Greg Little with our Compensatory, also Sidney Rice/Mike Simms-Walker is signed via Free Agency.

DT: Draft Austin with Buffalo's second. Draft Jurrell Casey with our first pick in the third.

OG: Draft BPA with our fourth

OT: BPA with our compensatory in the sixth

TE: Grab Jordan Cameron in the fifth.

S: BPA in the seventh, Jerrard Terrant if he's there for depth/special teams.

Think that about covers it....

For me personally,

I like

1. QB- Cam Newton, Auburn (Franchise Quarterback)

3. CB- Davon House, New Mexico State (Starting Cornerback)

3. DT- Drake Nevis, Louisiana State (Starting DT)

4. NT- Sione Fua, Stanford (Starting DT)

5. TE- Rob Housler, Florida Atlantic (Will be a tight end of the future)

6. WR/KR- Dwayne Harris, ECU (Will handle all special teams)

6. K- Alex Henery, Nebraska (Will be the future kicker)

7. DE- Markus White, Florida State (Will be a great back-up)

This would make be ecstatic about football next year.

Also, you can't add free agents at this time due to the lack of the CBA, therefore, the only way to get better is throught the draft.

    • He was so much fun to watch as a player but is a prototypical example of the old "never meet your heroes" adage. Great player, not a great guy.
    • Look.... if us BY "haters" give credit about his GWDs...... Will the BY stans also have honest discussion about the 55minutes before the last 5 in which BY has put up 9/20 for 78 yards 0 TDs???
    • The way they are handling now is how they should have handled it from the start instead of that you get a series, you a get a series. Let Chuba spell until he had some of his step back.  We definitely could have put a better showing against Buffalo and their weak run defense had we employed the same game plan we did against Green Bay. Saints were determined to stop the run and make Bryce beat them, Atlanta had similar plan and the coaches and Bryce were able to respond.  Rico although didnt have the best rushing game was vital in the passing game and his catch and run help get us into the redzone there at the end of regulation probably should have been a touchdown that out of bounds was a judgement call it wasn't conclusive and thus should have went with the original call on the field.  Roco brings that dawg to the offense that it shorely lacked up until Miami game. Interesting it was his call that help seal the win for us, glad the coaches were listening. Hope they can get a deal done and run it back next year.
