Started my first homebrew yesterday.

I know there is a beer thread, but anything that takes that much of my time deserves it's own.

Have to be honest, it does not smell nearly as good as you would hope when you are getting everything to boil. House still smells a bit "off".

I don't know what that means.

in a week or so the yeast will settle to the bottom of the bucket/carboy. That's your yeast cake. That yeast continues to work even after the obvious fermentation is done.

Yeast also provides you with carbonation at the bottling stage.

Honestly, I'd say leave it in there this time around and after you're a little more comfortable you can start thinking about filtering or cold-crashing the beer for clarity. The yeast doesn't affect the taste, if you don't like the way it looks pour it into a glass and leave the sediment at the bottom of the bottle.

i think the yeast enhances the flavor and body, especially over the long term

americans are just sissies that thinks worms are icky and spiders are scary

oh and snakes are slimy too

yea but trappist ales are an entirely different kind of beer, brewed warm with a different kind of yeast. not saying yeast doesn't have an affect on taste, it does but my understanding is that trappists get an inordinate amount of taste from the yeast. much more than most beer.

I have a funnel with a filter disc. I filter the wort and then I siphon through the filter into a second container before bottling.

I have a bottling bucket, with a nozzle. I guess that I could siphon into a strainer and into the other bucket.

    • Same-ish here, 12 team league with only 1 TE spot, but we have a WR/TE flex spot as well.  Most teams carry 2 TE's with a few who actually carry 3, so yea, not easy to get quality TE production in my league. The Vikings weird usage of Hockenson is killing me, he's gone multiple games where he doesn't have a catch through 3 quarters.  Then when they're playing from behind in the 4th, they'll just dink and dunk to him a bunch of times for chunks of yards and end up getting close to 10 points in the end.  Why not just use him all game if he's so effective in the 4th? Gonna plays Taylor though, I figure they won't put Horn on him until/unless he is making a bunch of plays, at which point I'll probably have my points out of him by then anyways.
    • Agree with your premise basically completely, though I might move some people around - especially the vets at the end... Goff and Mayfield look like centerpiece players now, and Darnold I'd say is around the top of the complimentary. Daniel Jones is still unknown.
    • If I had to parse it out, there's still a good to bad scale for both the centerpiece QB and complimentary types.  The idea isn't that they're all elite, but have the traits so that the teams are built for them, rather than them just being inserted in.  Some just don't lift the team enough, others do (Allen/Mahomes/etc.). But it can be a gradual process (not always instant) where maybe they started as complimentary early and grew into a stud the team eventually built around. Centerpiece: Josh Allen Patrick Mahomes Matthew Stafford Lamar Jackson Joe Burrow Justin Herbert Jayden Daniels Drake Maye Dak Prescott CJ Stroud Trevor Lawrence  Caleb Williams Jordan Love Kyler Murray (worst of this bunch) Complimentary Brock Purdy Jalen Hurts Dillon Gabriel Tua    Unsure So-far: Jaxon Dart Michael Penix JJ McCarthy Bo Nix Cam Ward Vet who was inserted and then sorta built-around: Jared Goff Baker Mayfield Sam Darnold Daniel Jones
