worst corner in the league

On the back of yet another impressive display on special teams I’ve heard a number of calls for Patrick Peterson (-1.1) to be named Defensive Rookie of the Year today. There’s only one minor problem with this view; he hasn’t played well as a cornerback so far. This game was no exception; he was thrown at nine times, allowing six receptions for 74 yards and never came close to breaking up a pass. While things could change (as not all the week 12 game data is in) he currently leads all corners in yards allowed with 641. Peterson is also tied for second in penalties given up (his eight equals Cedric Griffin and is one behind Brandon Browner); hardly DROTY material. The truth is he was so far off his man in this game it looked like a deliberate plan to let Brandon Lloyd (+1.3) have whatever he wanted underneath as long as he didn’t give up the big play behind him. If that was the plan it was carried out to the letter. That said, if you have a player of Peterson’s undoubted talent in a dead season when better to let him knock off the rough edges?

so, in a nutshell as of right now the Cardinals spent a top 5 draft pick on a great punt returner. Other than that he racks up penalties and gets abused in almost every game (seattle being his best performance giving up 1 catch for less than 10 passing yards and an INT). This is a lot different from the guy that was going to come in day one and start and "shut down" half the field with no safety help that everyone said he would be before the season

I think a lot of the hype for PP was because of his campaign for Heisman last year and his return ability. He's always been a great athlete but I always thought Prince Amukamara was a better cover corner. That's what I look for in a CB, not their return abilities.

sorthnarolina basically championed PP before the draft to the point where you thought he was going to walk in playing Deion Sanders-level cornerbacking

he hasn't logged in since last july

hard to disagree with that, but that wasn't the sentiment a lot of people were expressing pre-draft

Yeah, those talking heads. Them and meteorologists have the best gigs in the world. In any other jobs if you are wrong half as many times as they are, your butt is fired. But they make a career out of being wrong.

Ugh, just a pet peeve. Incidentally, though, I wonder how good Deion Sanders was in coverage at the beginning of his career? I'm not old enough to really know, but since PP's skill set is similar to Deion's as far as ST and position goes, I wonder how their rookie years compare. Was Deion a great corner when he came in, or was he a great punt returner first and the other came later?

to put it mildly, Deion Sanders was amazing from day 1. He even juggled being a shut down corner with playing baseball part time.

of course CBs had it easier with the rule changes the past 20 years, but there is zero comparison between the two

    • His completion % wasn’t even high.  Think OP misstated a stat.  Bryce was 30th this week in completion %.  The bottom is where he has been every year in the NFL in that department.   you gotta dig real deep in analytics to make a Bryce argument
    • Agreed.  Setting protections is one of the more difficult things for an NFL QB to learn but I did see a lot of improvement over the past year.  It's still an issue but getting better.  Reich hung him out to dry in that aspect and almost got him killed. Once Canales gave him a hot read or option for blitzes and pressure he did much better.  The more experience he gets the better he'll get.  That's also another good reason to keep a strong oline.  Mitigates that a little bit.
    • I'll just piggy back off what I said earlier here.    The problem with Bryce is and has always been his height combined with his arm. The reason he works so well ad-libbing is that he usually gets out of the pocket or allows the offensive line time to open throwing lanes which allows him to see the defense better, and manipulate the defense because of his legs which eliminates the need to read defense mostly.    The reason he doesn't work well in structure is because he can't make those reads at the line on what the defense is running and where to move protection, so he doesn't immediately know where to go with the ball based on coverages/ pressures so he runs the play exactly as it's called and goes through normal progressions 1-2-3.    He's gotten better at reading just based on Sundays game because he didn't nearly look as bad at it as he did last year and he didn't have AT to set lines and stuff for him.
