Matthias' Mock (3rd Take)

Martin on which side?

For me, regardless of RT or LT Kirkpatrick will prob be higher on the big board AND addresses an actual need...a big one.

I think Martin could come in and handle LT responsibilities right away. Kirkpatrick isn't really a ball hawk type corner. He's physical yes, but I feel Casey is physical and can intercept the ball on a consistent basis. I project Hayward will be a better pro corner than Kirkpatrick.

What did you trade to get back into the 3rd round?

At first I was thinking trading our current top ten 2nd round pick for a lower 2nd and pick up a third. Yet then if we do that, we may miss out on drafting Hayward. So I'm thinking trading a player for a compensatory 3rd rounder. (Mike Goodson perhaps)

1. Dream Scenario...trade with cinncy

Draft: 1st Round- Quinton Couples and Dontari Poe

2nd Round: Best Corner available

4th Round: Keenan Robinson (insurance policy maybe 3-4 linebacker)

5th Round: Scat back, returner, or special teams depth.

Offseason: Restructure Gross, Warton, TD, Release ron edward, mare,

Should leave enough cap room to sign Laron Landry, and the rest of our own free agents worth signing....

2012 Starting Lineup

Offense:

OL- Gross, Warton, Kallil, Harengadner/Bell, Otah

TE- Olsen, Barnige, Hopefully Shockey if hes a good price

Qb- Obviously

RB- Obviously

Wr- Smith, Lafell, Gettis, Resign Nene if it makes sense

Defense:

DT- Poe, Couples

DE- Hardy, CJ

LB- Beason, Anderson, TD

CB- Gamble, 2nd rounder, or Hogan

Saftey- Godfrey, Landry

2. More Realistic Scenerio

Draft: Trade up draft claiborne

2nd round: say bye bye to our second round pick

rest of the draft stays the same

Offseason is essentially the same

2012 Starting Line Up

DT- Try the experimental rotation of Shirley, kerase, fua, mclain, neblet, hope for the best

LB- Same

CB- Gamble, Claiborne (Dang!!!!!!)

Saftey- Godfrey, Landry (Dang!!!! best secondary in the league maybe)

Theres holes in both situations but its hardly as bad as if we draft am offensive player in the first and end up with an average defensive line and below average secondary....

I like the draft overall. Like other have said, I don't like the DT in the 3rd round.. he won't be any better than our 3rd round DTs from last year.. and he will be behind in learning the scheme compared to Fua and McClain.

I like Martin as a player, but what if Otah comes back healthy? Martin would be riding pine for a year and have no impact on our team this season.. I would not like that outcome either.

I believe Derek Wolfe will be better than both McClain and Fua. DW has been named the best defensive player in his conference, the same conference McClain played in. (Being named the best all around defensive player in your conference really says something) As far as learning the scheme, that's just something all rookies will have to do. To be completely honest, I wouldn't mind if they released both McClain and Fua.

It will probably be easier for Otah's body to be moved to RG. At the T position, he has to go up against the most athletic d-lineman, but it is much easier to block a fat DT.:D

    • That makes me wonder, how many starting tackles in the NFL and/or elite tackles have short arms? I feel like there’s probably lots of tackles that end up being drafted in later rounds because they had short arms or didn’t have the physical tools.     also why not draft a tackle in the later rounds that we could move to guard or center if they fail, instead of drafting a center? If we draft a center we know they aren’t going to play tackle but if you draft a tackle they could end up playing any of the 3 positions, look at BC for example. It feels like it’s a better decision to draft a tackle in later rounds than a center.
    • Damn back to 10th. I only caught the last 5 minutes but some of those 3's were horrible lol. In that close of game you can't be launching those many hail mary's when you could be chipping away from the foul line. I guess no one wanted to get in the paint and didn't trust the refs to give them the calls maybe? Gonna watch the highlights to get a better idea of the flow of the game
    • I agree.  The Big 12 is a good conference, and he is the swinging dick in that conference.  If Bill Self retires, that sets Kansas back a bit, and Arizona moves even further ahead as the best team in that conference.  Arizona can crush west coast recruiting with USC / UCLA no longer being relevant for LA kids, and Gonzaga not being able to compete moneywise.   If Lloyd comes here, he will be second fiddle to Duke every single year in NIL and recruits.  Not to mention the entire SEC and Big East for kids who want to stay in those regions to play. This is why I keep saying go get Mark Few.  Has proven he can do more with less from an X / O perspective but can also recruit All American players and compete at a high level. He's a god at Gonzaga, but for $9M he'd make the move as that's 4x what he's making at Gonzaga, and makes him the highest paid coach in the country.
