Yards After Catch

I in the Steve Smith HOF thread and it made me start thinking about different ways he separates himself from other receivers and one big way IMO is his ability to fight for extra yardage. I found the list of YAC leaders last season and we have two players on the list.

1 Wes Welker NE 751

2 Darren Sproles NO 724

3 Ray Rice Bal 696

4 Rob Gronkowski NE 668

5 Arian Foster Hou 641

6 Victor Cruz NYG 603

7 Percy Harvin Min 566

8 Calvin Johnson Det 545

9 Aaron Hernandez NE 534

10 Jonathan Stewart Car 519

11 Larry Fitzgerald Ari 508

12 Fred Jackson Buf 501

13 Brent Celek Phi 500

14 Mike Wallace Pit 493

15t Jimmy Graham NO 485

15t Pierre Thomas NO 485

17 Steve Smith Car 467

18 Ryan Mathews SD 464

19 Mike Tolbert SD 463

20 Matt Forte Chi 456

I completely forgot about Jonathan "The Steamroller" Stewart. With him taking the majority of the snaps this year and his ability to fight for extra yards how do you think we're going to utilize him along with D-Will?

I wish this stat was tracked more closedly by the NFL on their game line...so that fantasy numbers for long passes...hitch to long passes could be given out better.

Cam throws 60 yards for a 90 yd td...give the receiver the 3 differential and the 60 to the QB. That sort of thing.

Smith has the ability to accelerate so fast...much like Welker...that their YAC is off the charts.

    • Backup QB has been an issue of mine for a long time but not just for Bryce and Dalton. We have never really been able to develop QBs or build an offense around strengths. Dalton isn't going to move the needle one way or another. The problem is in our FO and possibly coaching staff (current staff undetermined as of yet). I'm of the belief that you always try to get better. Dalton wasn't good other than one game against an abysmal defense. Churn the roster, including backup QB. If BY isn't the guy we've got to start over anyway. Who knows. We might actually find someone good. Other teams have done it before.
    • Lol. Worst case? I think you mean most likely result. I don't think people are going to be wasting much breath on Dalton or QB2 if Bryce flounders this year. It's going to be people calling for coaches, GM's and owners heads for the mess we got ourselves in with Bryce in the first place. Rightfully so.
    • I mean that's his sole reason for being here. He doesn't win football games. He's here to keep Bryce comfortable.
