John Madden story

Told by Vic on jaguars.com...

It’s from Dec. 22, 1972. Madden was practicing his Oakland team in a closed practice at Three Rivers Stadium, the day before what would become a famous playoff game. Steelers owner Art Rooney took his brother, a missionary priest in China who was home for the holidays, for a tour of the stadium. When they got to the field, Madden raced over to them and politely told Rooney the practice was closed and that he had to leave. Rooney introduced his brother to Madden, and Father Dan became incensed that he and his brother were being chased from the field by no less than a fellow Irishman, so Father Dan put an Irish curse on Madden. The following day, Madden’s team lost on the “Immaculate Reception.”

Raider fans have done their own fair share of cursing over that play.

I wonder whether that or the "Tuck Rule" draws more silver and black anger.

They got a bad call against Denver one year, too. The Broncos team that went on to get smoked by Dallas, 27-10.

The New England thing evened out. They hosed the Pats in the late 70s on a call late in the game...first round of playoffs. Hell, may have been the same year as the Denver game.

    • Bryce is like Jerry Seinfeld.  Bad jokes, very limited on screen charisma, and a bad actor.  But they surrounded him with the greatest supporting cast of all time (writing included) and you can name the show after the guy.  Unfortunately QB does not work that way.
    • I just feel like TE is an excuse to the BPA rule, unless you really just have NOBODY at TE, which I personally don't feel is the case for us with the 3 we have right now. Even if you were to say a TE was our actual top ranked player on the board when our 1st round pick is on the clock, I can't see it being such a big gap between him and players at positions of more of a need to where it's then a dumb decision to not take the highest ranked player left on the board. Because yes, a game changing TE can really change your team, but at the same time, it also is the least important position in today's game, since realistically the best TEs are really just big WRs these days anyways, so if you have a good enough WR (and RB) room, TE becomes less of a need. I also think if Coker and Horn Jr pan out, XL could be used in more of a TE type of role where we line him up in the slot and hope to get favorable matchups against smaller DBs or slower LBs.
