Any Pet Lovers? Torn Between Two Dog Breeds

Other than having one before, what are the reasons for wanting a dobie? What's the main purpose the dog will serve?

My parents have always had German born & trained Doberman Pinscher personal protection & German Shepard sentry dogs. They are insanely intelligent & very friendly, but those bastards are bad news for a person with bad intentions.

I don't need anything that extreme, but if I get a Dobedman I will teach him some basics for house watching. They are the smartest breed IMO. Dogs like labs & retreivers are smart in that they learn with repetition where as Dobermans are thinkers. I wouldn't risk a dog for my personal safety, I carry a Glock 30 .45 auto for that. I do a lot of hiking & running which would be perfect for either, but sspecially a Ridgeback. I don't think they would be as well suited for intense training but they love s ton of exercise which fits me well.

With my work schedule I don't really have the time to care for a dobermans cropped ears. It t takes a lot of time & supervision to care for them. That's why I'm leaning towards thd ridgdback for now then add a dobie when I have the oroper time in 2-3 years.

The 3rd breed I really like are Siberian Huskies. But I couldn't handle all the shedding in the house. Most people dont know but dobies are an indoor breed. They only have one coat unlike most dogs. Which means they freeze in the winter & get sun burnt in the summer.

Then why do mutts make the best pets?

They don't. My gsd does.

Sn, I went with a gsd when I began working 3rd to help ease the wife and kids. Took off a week of work when we brought him home at 8 weeks. He was completely house trained in 2 days. At 9 weeks he knew all of his basic commands; sit, stay, come, heel, lay down, etc. I started him on bite work shortly after, getting him use to the jute and leather. Needless to say he's 2.5 now and I still work him.

Honestly if I were you I'd go with the rr. They aren't popular enough to be bred shitty so you won't have to spend the time diving into pedigrees to see what youre getting. Once my chaps get old enough I want a mal.

GSD are very smart. My parents last dobie was crate trained & knew all his basic commands within a week. Those are the two most intelligent breeds, by a mild.

I probably will go with the RR. Nobody around here has even heard of them. I was just curious to see if anyone owned one to ask how easily they are trained, etc. Dobermans are a ons person dog & will follow that one person harder than your shadow & are extremely protective towards their owner.

From what I have read RR seem more of an independent breed. But they are unique, rare, & will make an excellent running/hiking buddy.

Never had any experience with em but have heard the stories of their incredible toughness. A lot like an apbt in terms of will power and high pain threshold.

Cheaper, too. lol

A strong pedigree Doberman will cost you $800-1k plus $3-500 for a correct ear trim. Ridgebacks seem to be between $5-700. Do you know of any breeders in NC? I haven't been able to locate one.

If it weren't for the shedding I'd consider a Siberian Husky. But my gf's cat already sheds all over everything. My parents neighbor had a siberian husky/timber wolf hybrid. Talk about an intimidating dog. He had her trained to growl with her hair standing up on her back. But she was a big baby. Lol
