2013 DB Draft Prospects

The safety position was targetted in the 1st round of last years draft (Mark Barron) was at the top of Hurney'Rivera's draft board, but was taken with the pick before us. Nothing has changed. We are still in the market for a top flight safety prospect. As of now, there are 2 potential safety prospects that are projected to be a Top15 pick. 4 prospects in the first 2 rounds.

#1 - Eric Reid, LSU, 6'2' 212lbs. A Mark Barron clone with same strengths and weakness, also same size. Eric is a safety capable of being the 8th man in the box. Displays great tackling technique, and leads with his shoulder instead of his head to avoid costly penalties. Extremely well-rounded as both a run and pass defender. Good instincts. Takes very good angles to the ball carrier and consistently makes the open field tackle. If available, it'd be very difficult to pass on this player.

#2 - David Amerson, NC St, 6'3" 198lbs. David played exclusively at FS in high school, so not only does he know the position, but he has the drive, and size to be an elite talent for many years in the NFL. I think many teams will look at him as a safety prospect in this draft. Elite ball skills, excellent instincts, body control is superb, and quickness and leaping ability is blue-chip. Amazing in zone coverage. Had 13 INTs, 1 short of the NCAA record as sophomore. The only negative on Amerson might be physicality and play against the run. He is definitely a coverage safety.

#3 - TJ MCDonald, USC, 6'3" 205lbs. Might be a 2nd round prospect. McDonald has a fantastic and versatile skill set. He has the speed to play free safety and cover a lot of ground in the deep part of the field. He does a good job of picking up receivers running deep and seldom ever gets beat in coverage. He also has good size and strength to play in the tackle box. He is a tough run defender that is adept at operating in the short part of the field.

#4 - Tony Jefferson, Oklahoma, 5'11' 212lbs. Very high character prospect. Scheme diverse, can play both safety spots. Extremely fast, 4.4 speed. Never out of position, and does not take false steps. Very physical and aggressive, good jam and always looking for the big hit. Standout blitzer which is somewhat rare for a DB prospect. Throws his body around with reckless abandon. Excellent in pursuit. Very good in man-to-man coverage, and will be able to be used as a slot corner.. and matches up well against most tight ends.

I wouldn't mind trading down and taking Amerson as a FS. This topic has been talked about Amerson may be best as a safety in the next level. Amerson is slipping by day.
