SHE first swung into action 50 years ago, helping her boyfriend Batman rid Gotham City of villains until she was killed off in 1979.

Now Batwoman is making a comeback, replacing Batman - who is missing, presumed dead - in the popular DC Comics series.

And this time around the superheroine's alter ego, Kathy Kane, is a red-headed lesbian.

Billed as a "lesbian socialite by night and a crime-fighter by later in the night", the new Batwoman is clad in a figure-hugging black outfit with knee-high red stiletto boots.

She is set to appear in at leasty 12 issues of the Detective Comics, the first of which will appear in June, the BBC reports.

"We've been waiting to unlock her - it's long overdue," DC Comics writer Greg Rucka said.

"Yes, she's a lesbian. She's also a redhead.

"If people are going to have problems with it, that's their issue."

Batwoman was first outed in 2006 and has made a number of cameo appearances in the series.

Batman was killed by a fireball last November, though fans suspect he'll be back.

    • Looks like we're fifth in running plays/play action plays when in the lead and about 10th in the league when we fall behind.  The biggest thing I take from this is not that we drop off like that, because every team does, but that we drop off so much. A lot of the best teams don't  drop off much, depending on the game situation, preferring to stick to their game plan through out. Some of those are very good teams. Baltimore barely deviates from their run/action heavy plan. At the other end, KC also barely deviates, but they have one of the least run oriented attacks in the league by these stats. On the other side, there are teams that make even bigger shifts (based on last year's performance) and they are teams that for various reasons found themselves in desperation attempts. Dallas, Atlanta, the Browns, Bucs and Bengals were all literally throwing out their game plans and trying to either lean on their top end QB or were just frantically trying to create something downfield. Considering the years of us completely abandoning the run (oh those Matt Rhule days), maybe we are starting to stabilize. Don't even get me started on the Reich days...
    • I am kindof in the camp that its not an addiction for him just a dumb ass kid who didnt think he would get caught.  I think the "addiction" angle was the story they went with in hopes of not being banned for life   But I doubt we show interest as I think he is going to be pricey (Draft capital wise)
    • It shows we like to run the ball but abandon it pretty quickly when we are behind.
