The Race For First... Well Last

Recommended Posts

As the Hurricanes season faltered away, I began looking toward the 2013 NHL Draft and all I have to say is, WOW!!! This was a perfect year to tank as there could possibly be up to five elite (and I mean elite) skill level players in this draft.

The Carolina Hurricanes would be currently picking fourth if the current standings held...

1. Colorado Avalanche: 31 points

2. Florida Panthers: 32 points

3. Calgary Flames: 32 points

4. Carolina Hurricanes: 34 points

The Canes have a chance to get the number one pick, but realistically; they will be looking at a pick ranging from two to four. With that said, here are four prospects to keep an eye on.

Defenseman: Seth Jones (consensus number one pick) (NHL Comparison: Alex Pietrangelo)

    • No one way to do it, it does appear that with the bigger draft picks of the last 5 years…..majority haven’t steered clear of young QBs on the roster being their hopeful guy. Especially past their rookie seasons but even some the biggest ones have had it early.   As far as Andy Dalton, the two young guys he has “mentored”…..have had very rough NFL starts.  Which really ask the why the heck is Dalton here.   He doesn’t really check any box.  No young potential.  Can’t step in and win.  And his mentor track record with Fields and now Bryce is bad
    • I had thought the Panthers might let him play out his contract this year and hope he stays healthy. If not draft a left tackle and move Ekwonu to right tackle.
    • Frankly, if most teams in the NFL lose their starting QB for a significant amount of time, they're screwed. The fantasy is that one has a future Tony Romo or a Nick Foles that can carry a stacked team. The reality is that you might get roughly 3~5 games out of your backup before it all falls apart. Remember all of Peyton Manning's backups? Utterly terrible. Speaking of backup QB's, Raiders may need one. https://www.nfl.com/news/raiders-qb-aidan-o-connell-suffered-fractured-wrist-in-preseason-finale-expected-to-be-out-6-8-weeks
