25 years ago off of the Charleston coast. A diesel boat close to home in the middle of a battle group doing exercises. One of the guys who died had just transferred from where I was working, it was considered cush duty as it was a seagoing billet but this old boat only did short stints for training surface guys.

I had an Uncle who retired as a Chief Petty Officer - quartermaster - on diesel subs. He was my favorite uncle - his arms and legs were covered with old school tatoos. He had some stories.

Diesel permeates everything for sure - we had one for backup power and ran it a number of times during run up to patrol and on exercises when we went off of patrol and its pretty pungent.
