In Other News, Kanye's Baby Has Been Named...

Recommended Posts

You barely have to be able to form complete sentences to sell rap records these days. Plies? Gucci Mane? Future?

You're being far too kind with the genius label. Let's be clear here, plenty of other rappers make songs about cars, bitches, drugs, jewelry, and any other meaningless poo and still sell records. It's been done long before Kanye.

Kanye started as a no name producer from the Chicago streets. He is now one of the wealthiest and most successful individuals in the history of hip-hop. He is arguably the single reason of success behind some of the biggest and best artists today, such as Lupe Fiasco, Kid Cudi, and Big Sean. He owns a successful record company, he is one of the best selling artists of the past decade, he has released some of the most critically acclaimed albums in recent hip-hop memory, etc etc.

In terms of net worth, he is up there with guys like Jay Z, Dr Dre, and P-Diddy, despite being in the business for a significantly less amount of time.

I don't think it's fair to compare him to guys like Plies and Gucci.

I never compared them as individuals, I said their content isn't all that different these days.

Kanye didn't start off lyrically the way he is now, but it's slowly what he's become. The industry norm.

I don't think lyrical content is equivalent to overal musicality at all. #1 production value with decent lyrics = better than sh*t production and sh*t lyrics.

So your saying beats>lyrics? Well that's pretty much what mainstream hip hop/rap has become.

I've heard his new album, it's a mess to put it kindly. I know he can do better and so does he, but the dude doesn't care. Why should he? Sheep will continue to flock and buy his album because of his name and he knows that.

Well no, I'm a huge fan of conscious hip-hop, and I will take lyrics and concept/stories over anything. Prince Ea, Lupe, Kendrick, Cudi are probably my favorites, and it's mainly because they make me feel something emotionally with their lyrics.

I don't like Yeezus either, but MBDTF may just be the best, most cohesive hip-hop album of all time. Production wise, how it flow, the features, and even the lyrical content is above average.

    • Then we had some impressive coaches to finish 8th from worst plus all of our injuries.  Titans and Raiders were pretty bad as well.
    • Agents have been out-negotiating GMs for years. That's why they had to implement the rookie wage scale. Top drafted rookies were basically starting to walk into the NFL as some of the highest paid guys in the league. Take it up in the next CBA. In the meantime, it is what it is. Agents hold the upper hand in these rookie negotiations and they know it. The teams already have a significant unrecoverable investment spent on these draftees in the value of the pick that they spent. Given the rookie wage scale there's not much to negotiate other than guarantees and offset language and once again the agents are kicking the GMs' asses again.
    • Except it's not about the money, it's precedent and teams not wanting to go down that path.  Once you guarantee all the 2nd rounders, then the 3rd rounders will want it, and so on.  If they keep viewing it as say, "well it's only X amount of money" then it's a slippery slope that doesn't end. Then you get Free Agents saying, "well if you're fully guaranteeing the contract of an unproven 57th pick of the draft, you clearly should be fully guaranteeing mine as your big FA signing this offseason" The NFL doesn't work with fully guaranteed contracts under it's current cap model.  If you want to give them out to the true elite of the elite players at impact positions like QB and Edge, then so be it, but there needs to be a line in the sand or it will get real messy.
