Dolphins "parting ways' with Assistant GM Brian Gaine

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Lord almighty, the Dolphins are an unholy mess right now.

Gaine, their now former Assistant GM, has been on a the radar as a rising name in the personnel world.  At one point, people expected he'd be the frontrunner for the Dolphins GM job vacated when Jeff Ireland was fired.  But as was a common story in the Miami GM search, something went wrong.  And now he's out, with their being some dispute as the whether it's his choice or the teams.  there's even a story that he was escorted out of their facilities, though the Dolphins have denied that.

So what's my interest?  Well, the Panthers don't have anyone with the title of 'Assistant GM' or even 'Director of Player Personnel' at this point, i.e. an heir apparent to Dave Gettleman for down the road (our own Eric DeCosta, so to speak),  And while my personal pipe dream for that spot would be to somehow wrestle Marc Ross away from the Giants, that's not an easy option.  The Giants gave Ross a promotion last year and may well want him to succeed GM Jerry Reese at some point.

What about a guy like Gaine?

He has an overall positive rep from everything I've found.  His name has come up quite a few times in the last few seasons when a GM job has come open (speculated here, but was never actually part of the process).

The downside?  His last several years have been spent working under Jeff Ireland.  And while Ireland was known for having a good eye for personnel, he also presided over the disaster that you're seeing in the Dolphins locker room right now.  That, and Ireland was the guy who famously asked Dez Bryant if his mother worked in a less than reputable profession.

As to connections, there are none with Dave Gettleman, Don Gregory or anyone else in the Panthers front office that I can find.  They just missed each other in New York when Gaine was a player (tight end) on the Giants practice squad the year before Gettleman joined their front office.  He's spent most of his career with the Jets or Dolphins and had a good longstanding relationship/apprenticeship with coaching legend Bill Parcells (someone Gettleman and Ernie Accorsi would be familiar with).  he does have one Panther connection, having been with the Cowboys for a couple of years when Assistant ST Coach Bruce DeHaven was coaching there.

Could be worth a look, though I'd want to know more about the circumstances of his departure from the Dolphins and what role he played in the current situation there.

You'll have to excuse me.  This time of year I'm used to looking at coaching or GM candidates.  Since we actually have some stability at those spots now, I needed something else to research

But seriously, he might really be worth a look, though I admit I'd still prefer finding some way to steal Marc Ross.

I'm still amazed Gettleman has not added anyone to the front office since he was hired.

We know from his own words that he doesn't want to be the guy who just kicks all the old people out and brings his own people in.

That said, I know he evaluates everyone's performance annually.  And you can see from some of the player decisions he's made that he's not afraid to part with popular/well-liked guys if he believes it's in the best interest of the team.

As nice a guy as he seems to be, he does still live by the mantra of "it's not personal, it's business".  And after some of the contract decisions Hurney made, we needed someone like that.

He added a vet scout, but not at anyone's expense.

Gaine could be added to a new position without anyone being let go.

And honestly, I'd like for us to have someone in a position like that, whether it be Gaine, Ross or someone else well qualified.

(i.e. not Brandon Beane)

agreed.  If he didn't want to let anyone go, it still wouldn't hurt to have added.  I wish we had a greater stance on analytics, more pro scouting, an assistant GM wouldn't be the worst and at his age, him picking an heir apparent has value (though I'm not in love with a concept like hiring your successor).

Team can use a lot more than they've got.  Truth is, you're talking about a $120 million yearly cost of payroll that's handled by (my guess) a payroll of 5% of that.

I might take a quick look at the size of the Giants front office structure and scouting operation versus ours.

We had some discussion about that recently in another thread, but I don't recall if we got the specifics on both.

(if we did, it's just my old man memory not recalling it)

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
