People have to remember all that stuff with Peppers. Right? Would not sign a long term deal. The team (JR? JR/Fox?) obsessed over keeping him and tagged him. Then they tagged him again which was really really really expensive at the time. Cap space was screwed after paying him like a star QB* for two years. And we got nothing for him after all that.
That is where we were before the Delhomme restructure/new deal, I think Jake's deal gave them relief. They needed a lot of relief. Doesn't make it smart, but I don't think it was really all Hurney behind it at that time. Sure he wrote it but I doubt it was all him.

Pep got 16 and 20 mil
Peyton Manning got 11.5 and 14 for example.
He was up there. Look at the highest QB salaries for those years and Pep was right there. It was pretty ridiculous.
Racists have been gathering under that flag for generations. Whether is was up or down wouldn't have meant squat to Dylan Roof, he still would have committed the act. The flag in regards to that act is immaterial.
On the other side of things, do white supremacists feel more or less empowered with a their "symbol" flying above the state capital? The Confederate Battle Standard is a loser's flag. There is ZERO nobility in pining away for a revival of the antebellum society. The desire to protect it or participation trophies as some form of historical accuracy is childish. We don't need the constant reminders of the one of the many shames of our forefathers. We see the consequences all around us, constantly.
Haley said something really dumb, and got called out for it. It's a way for her to keep in national discussions so her profile doesn't dip too low. When she wants to run for something else, or get another book deal, she'll be recalled as a "steward of Southern nobility and history."
