Probably more like the last two than the last three (three seasons ago was Reich). The team is showing legitimate improvement under Canales, But the goal isn't to be better than you used to be. The goal is to be great. I'm not convinced we reach that goal with Bryce.

I think statistics, results and the eye test have been a very conclusive and whole picture of what a bad QB looks like.

What if the next DC prefers a 4-3 scheme though?

Tilis isn't really a personnel guy based on his resumé. He's more of an analyst/ organizational type. (that's why I wasn't in favor of him as a GM candidate) That's not to say he doesn't have personnel input, mind you. But that's not truly where his expertise lies. What he does bring to the organization is experience, history and a solid record in areas that aren't necessarily Morgan's strong suit.

What exactly are you claiming is Bryce's style then? and what are you claiming is the offensive style of the Canales tree? They are not a match. I mean, his physical limitations influence what Bryce's style is

If it comes to a choice between the two, Cam is much more deserving. Even today there are still sports media & coaches that compare present day & upcoming QBs play to Cam's & not just those with a direct connection to the Panthers.

Young's playing style definitely fits Canales. On style only, it could also fit Reich but Reich had a well-known preference for taller quarterbacks. Bryce's stature would have necessitated some retooling that I'm not certain happened. His issues here aren't style related so much as they are his physical limitations.

Todd Wash has more coaching experience, more DC (defensive coordinator) experience, more familiarity with DC (,Dave Canales) and probably the endorsement of DC (,Dom Capers) from previous stops. That said, Cooley is considered a hot DC candidate and, for what it's worth, ties as both a player and coach to John Carroll University. JCU has been a factory for producing solid NFL coaches and leaders. There's also the other "Carroll connection" to consider (Pete)

Does Newton own his win-loss record, though? Tying quarterbacks to their team's record is a complicated debate. Most football analysts would say it isn't fair, but on the flipside it's a very commonly used metric. Ultimately, I'm comfortable looking at whether we win or lose with a certain QB, but I acknowledge the folks who don't think it's a fair way to judge a career.

Cam will have a better shot at HoF simply because of his highlight reel. Stats be damned, there were things on the field he did that still haven't been duplicated, no matter how much Josh Allen tries. Ryan, while he catches a lot of flak here, was a darned good QB, but as Peter King once opined, if there was a Hall of Darned Good, he'd be a first balloter.

Those never work in this day and age of Twitter feeds, scream sheets and podcasts. Everyone has an anonymous source willing to trade a favor or a few bucks for something off the record. Besides, they almost never ever stand up in court.

It reminds me of the old DCs that would live and die by the Tampa 2. Evero has the same issue but his love child seems to be quarters.

I think that ship has sailed. You could say "But what about Philip Rivers" but that begs the question "Why did the Colts sign Rivers rather than Newton?" Familiarity plays a role here, but still...

Cam has potential to get in simply from all the stuff he did as a runner. But with Josh Allen passing him this year in that regard it will make it much harder.

Oh, for sure. But that's where coaching comes into play. It was the perfect storm. You had a young, super confident, super talented QB paired with an extremely limited OC. That's a recipe for disaster. That limited OC is gonna lean into that all world talent and burn the candle at both ends with a blowtorch. UNC went through this with Drake Maye. Early in his starting stint he was doing a lot of the Cam stuff. The crazy cartwheeling Superman dives and lowering his shoulder powering through DBs, etc. A not great college staff reeled that in but Shula was just like yeah, this is fine. I really wish he had been able to leverage Cam's MVP season into a HC offer to save us from ourselves. We would've had our pick of the litter of excellent OC candidates groveling to come to Carolina.
