Round 5: The Carolina Panthers select C Sam Hecht (Kansas State)

He's got a year behind fortner to work with our nutritionist/strength team. He doesn't have to start immediately. Jeez, I love what the FO did to say us up for the draft! -

Definitely my draft crush this year, although I had him in the 4th or maybe even 3rd. This kid got a mean streak! -
Round 4: The Carolina Panthers select CB Will Lee (Texas A&M)

I think so too. Let this guy redshirt a year and get up to nfl speed and he might be a steal. Potential to become a starter according to several draft profiles I've read in the last 5 minutes. -
Mike Kaye predicting we trade up in 2nd round

Don't forget Golday, he's in play. -
Round 1: The Carolina Panthers select OT Monroe Freeling (Georgia)
shaqattaq replied to rodeo's topic in Carolina Panthers
I already posted this, but cutting Lewis saves us $13M with only $3.7M dead money. Cutting him seems like a foregone decision, IMO. Plus, it would keep Ickey on his natural left side. -
Round 1: The Carolina Panthers select OT Monroe Freeling (Georgia)

Everyone screams BPA until BPA is a guy who goes into OTAs as a 2nd stringer. Which is best case scenario for Freeling because he DOES lack experience. This was the smart call and definitely quite a bit of a steal. -

Rodriguez, Golday, Hill and Allen are all sitting there. -

My thoughts exactly! Before his injury Icky was not a perineal pro-bowler anyway. He was mid-tier, slightly above average. We were getting ready to overpay or let him walk. As to the rest of our line...Moton cost's $28.4 million next year, we can save $14.5M with $13.9M dead money ($7M in 27 and $7M in 28 if we call it post 6/1, with $21.5M off our 27 cap). I have a feeling we let him play out 27 though if he's able. I've been hearing about his bum knee for 3 years and he hasn't slowed down yet. Releasing Hunt saves us $13.7M with $10.6M dead ($5.3 in 27 and 28 if post 6/1 with $19M savings in 27.).He's a beast, let him play it out IMO. Cutting Lewis next year saves $13M with only $3.75 dead money. No way we can afford not to do that. Look for his replacement to be drafted on Saturday. I think Fortner works out and earns himself an extension. -

I did a quick trade calculator and to jump from 19 to 17 (I was wondering what it would take to jump the Vikes) we'd need to give up at least 119. That's a perfect spot to improve our o-line, upgrade TE (Joly), nickel, etc. That's an expensive trade for a FS. Gotta just hope Minnesota skips Thieneman. As @Bear Handspointed out, they have no shortage of needs.
-
It makes a lot of sense, BUT... I don't like the idea of spending another 1st on a pass catcher. With Thieneman gone, i hope we go trenches, OT, DT, ILB.
-
This is absolute best case scenario as far as I'm concerned!! Unfortunately, I don't think Thieneman makes it past Minny or JRod makes it out of rd 1. Hecht has been my draft crush all off season, so yay! I have no idea who that DT is, but a quick glance tells me he's 25 lbs too light and needs to hit the strength and conditioning team hard. But...4th round doesn't have to jump right in, we need rotational guys to spell DB.
-
D-line sucks other than DB. Edge is a pretty darned good., but no pure pass rusher. ILB, we have 1 stud and decent depth. Need to draft a starter. CB, 2 studs outside, meh at nickel except for a UDFA oft-injured Thornton. No depth. SS- Moehrig is average (I personally think hes above average if not elite, bt PFF said average) and Ransom is a day 3 stud. FS - Scott really is our best FS. Nuff said! please draft a starter!! overall score...half studs, half JAGS. Biggest needs, DT/DE to take some of the heat off Brown. ILB to move Wallace to 2nd string, FS.

BOLD TAKE: Panthers will draft Jacob Rodriguez @19
shaqattaq replied to TheSpecialJuan's topic in Carolina Panthers
This is a weird draft. I feel like, at 19, there are a lot of "3rd best" options; FS, WR, OT, ILB, Hell, even QB. If we can get a solid, long-term starter, I'm not going to bitch about it regardless of position. FWIW, I'm not sold on Sadiq at all. -

Thomas Davis was singing his praises on Smitty's channel a few weeks ago. He had Rodriguez ranked 3rd behind the 2 from Ohio State. -
I'm surprised that we could find 2!

This is my thought too. Even Canales' receivers are expected to block well.
