Panthers terminating Rock Hill project agreements
TheSpecialJuan replied to Dorian Gray's topic in Carolina Panthers
Yes, it seems odd that a multi-billionaire would be able to shirk or minimize financial responsibilities by taking advantage of the bankruptcy laws. But rich people don’t get or stay that way by being stupid. In creating a company that was and is separate from his personal fortune and putting that company in charge of the aborted construction project for his football team’s stadium, Tepper can shield himself from having to dip into his own piggy bank to pay 100 cents on the dollar to those who provided services to a project that Tepper dumped once public financing didn’t come through. https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2022/06/02/david-tepper-takes-his-real-estate-development-company-to-bankruptcy/ -

The Chapter 11 filing lists contractor Mascaro/Barton Malow as the largest creditor, with an unsecured claim of $26,809,900, which the document notes is disputed. Also disputed is the second-largest claim, $20 million from York County, S.C., that is listed as unsecured. And architect Populous’ $784,534 unsecured claim is also listed as disputed. The league has very conservative finance rules, though they apparently won’t apply to a bankruptcy filing by an owner’s company unconnected legally to the team. GT Real Estate is registered in North Carolina. Its 2022 annual report filed with the secretary of state lists Tepper as the only officer, with no mention of the team or his sports holding company. Its 2019 organizing registration filed with the state was signed by Jeffrey Kaplan, an executive at Tepper’s hedge fund company. But the league could be concerned about the image of its wealthiest owner using the bankruptcy code to avoid paying, at least fully, contractors he hired, did work, and then weren’t needed. https://theathletic.com/3345348/2022/06/01/panthers-david-tepper-rock-hill-bankruptcy/ -

“The problem is, there doesn’t seem to be organizational consensus in Carolina over Mayfield,” she writes. “Some are much higher on him than others, which has been an issue, a source said. If they were all on the same page and all in, they could have him on the roster in time for their mandatory minicamp June 14-16 — same as the Browns.” https://www.cleveland.com/browns/2022/05/browns-wont-cut-baker-mayfield-so-panthers-others-shouldnt-hold-their-breath-no-2-receiver-not-a-priority-browns-insider.html

There is one player who has had a tremendous start to his opportunity with the team and that's undrafted free agent linebacker Arron Mosby who played his college ball at Fresno State. "We had him on our draft board and we evaluated him a lot," head coach Matt Rhule said earlier in the week. "Thought maybe as an edge player, stand up SAM who could maybe rush the passer. Then he got here and he was a former safety. So in rookie minicamp, we noticed right away that he's light on his feet, can play middle linebacker as well. So, to me, he's a guy that's got a chance. We're going to play him at linebacker, play him at SAM, play him on the ball, we'll move him around. He's got an urgency to him that you like and has a natural feel for football, a natural instinct for football and he's a worker. Mosby is a guy that really flashed in rookie minicamp and has continued to do so." https://www.si.com/nfl/panthers/gm-report/rhule-is-high-on-udfa-lb-arron-mosby-hes-a-guy-thats-got-a-chance -

Handful of players in red jerseys for open OTA, including DE Yetur Gross-Matos and WR Shi Smith. Attendance is good for the voluntary work (and yes DE Brian Burns is here). — Darin Gantt (@daringantt) May 24, 2022

DE Marquis Haynes not practicing, wearing a sling, left hand in a cast. Several other players in green jerseys, signifying they’re at some point in the return-to-play protocols, including Foreman and Nixon. — Darin Gantt (@daringantt) May 24, 2022

Rhule says Marquis Haynes had surgery on his hand. Doesn’t seem to be a long-term concern (that’s my interpretation at least). — Darin Gantt (@daringantt) May 24, 2022

Jeremy Chinn said all his focus has been on being a safety, and making more plays (and having an impact on the whole defense) there. He’ll still move around at times, but that’s what he is now. He also “loves" working with Steve Wilks, he said with a huge grin. — Darin Gantt (@daringantt) May 24, 2022
