REPORT: Panthers and Brian Burns not at all close to extension
CRA replied to TheSpecialJuan's topic in Carolina Panthers
I can name several that hit the open market in the last couple years. And there contracts are out there. And the league isn’t and hasn’t been paying those types Bosa money. The pass rushing specialist tier is a different pay tier. And heck, there are some more well rounded ones than Burns that have signed very recent deals. -

Panthers worked themselves into a bad spot no matter what at this point. Burns is a largely one dimensional pass rusher who has logged double digit sacks once. And forced into a corner to get out whack in the pecking order of pay. -
Teams are dumping more money into high end WRs and DBs than OTs.

well, there are basically two groups IMO on that. Group A - says the Panthers are in a full blown rebuild Group B- says we aren't. I'm group A. Which makes not taking that trade mind numbing. I mean, you can't trade literally every human in a legit rebuild. But you certainly take fantastic offers. Rebuilding still requires certain foundational aspects to exist. Because you can't groom Young up if you are complete trash. It would just be never ending bad positions he is always in. So you need some defensive guys for example. Because you don't want your D to be league worst as you build Bryce up. Because he will always been in bad spots and playing from behind. You still need guys to help show everyone how it's done. I just feel the it's not a rebuild crowd's justification of why we aren't' a rebuild....means there is no such thing as a rebuild if applied elsewhere. -

I mean, if the primary focus is and should be about growing your #1 overall QB.....I'd rather have Moore. What the most important thing in Carolina right now? How many wins you squeak out or how good you can get Bryce Young going? -

Mingo is still a rookie. The bar and load some are expecting from them just unreasonable. They both have to learn and grow. Time. Not carry the pass game out the gate. was TMJ ready for a big load as a rookie? Nah. And that's normal. And he was a better collegiate WR than Mingo. I mean, anything can happen. But expectations should not be for the exception of things. And then doing that across the board for everyone. Bryce Young being better than every other uber talented highly drafted QB out the gate. Mingo being a day 1 contributor. Miles Sanders going from being bad for years in the pass game to being CMC lite. Chark staying healthy Theilen hitting a time machine and on and on. -

Our recent past and the fact we haven't been a good football team. Then you look at life of the standard great rookie QB drafted high. We traded CMC. Combine all that. If we play a good football team, we are going to have to pass to attempt to compete. Plus, the league is designed for that to be how you move the ball. -

Fitt also gave Young a backfield of rushers and not a single proven pass catcher. Miles Sanders to date is a decent committee rusher. That's what he has proven to be. We should be forced into a lot of passing this year. Young needs a reliable pass catcher in the backfield. Not hope/belief. Fitt IMO hasn't done a great job around his #1 overall rookie QB. Much like is preseason, the rookie is going to have to play extremely well for us to compete IMO given what he has around him. -

that's why the post you quoted said I would take issue with the front office. -
I mean, we haven't had a winning season in a half decade.....and just entered a rebuild. The super fans are pumped but it's totally understandable the casual fans in the area aren't super excited. They get excited when you win.
-
KC should of highlighted Justyn Ross more. He blew up this preseason. He was a first round talent. Injury knocked him off the map. Think teams still get to fixated on where a guy was drafted. Toney does nothing but disappoint and he was essentially the primary play last night.

I'm a Burns fan. I'm not a fan of our GM doing dumb stuff. Hopefully Fitt gets him signed to a reasonable deal. And if he doesn't? I won't have an issue with Burns. I'll have an issue with the front office. -

Fitt already missed that deal. When you find someone being dumb you take advantage of it. -

Brians Burns is from Florida. He played his college ball in Florida. He isn't homegrown. He had little choice but to come to Carolina. It's business. Never get attached to players. They aren't attached to us. you need offensive stars on your roster in the modern day NFL. You can win without defensive stars. Easier with them. But it's an offensive league. A passing league. And pass rushers are important but even really good defensive lineman will tell you.....when a great QB is on he can make the DL talent largely irrelevant. -

I mean, GTD is what the whole thing is and really has always been about. -
Gross Matos is better against the run than Burns. No possibly wrong about that.
-
yeah, I mean he is clearly focused on brand building and setting up things off the field now. I think his brother comes off much more likeable.
-
Kelce makes a big difference. Think you got to shelf Toney. The plays were there. The other dudes on that roster can catch those balls.
-
refs tried to keep KC in that game by not calling the 192 false starts by the KC RT.

Why can’t the HC and DC say he is playing? I assume he took the field as the parties got closer. When it was reported they were far apart he wasn’t practicing. Now that they seem close he is preparing to play. and the HC and DC have to call it day by day because team Burns is likely claiming he won’t take the field to play with out a deal and they hope it gets resolved by then. -

I mean, not even the HC nor DC can say he is playing…. -
Falcons win a close and ugly game. - Standouts will be the 2 rookies. Young and Robinson. - I think much like the preseason, I think offensively Young will look really good to an extent without a lot of help. I think our WRs will struggle to get separation against a Falcon team that will be schemed up to play the small ball. - I don't think Ridder looks good. - I think Atl's running game essentially wins the game for them at the end of the day. - I think there will be a massive overreaction to it by the board.

top tier WRs are getting more guaranteed money than the top OTs. highest amount of guaranteed money in a OT contract presently is 64M. Several WR ahead of that. Same for CBs, several ahead of the lead OT in terms of guaranteed money. -
75ish guaranteed. Puts him at the top of tier 2 and not in tier 1.

Denver has a well built defensive roster. It’s why they could let Von Miller go and became a top 10 D with him at Rams. And why they could let Chubb go in season the next year after letting Von Miller go….and still finished as a top 10 D. Being well built should be the priority. Not dependent on one dude. Burns knee could go out tomorrow and you would have 120+ guaranteed sitting there if some got their way. and I’ve always been willing to part with anyone if and when the time comes. Which is never popular around here in the moment. We should of taken those picks. You got to take deals when they are too good. I clearly want Burns. But it doesn’t mean there aren’t limits to wanting him.
