I don’t think it is given Joe Brady is a lock for a HC just because he adds one more good year to the resume. Still a pretty light NFL resume for a HC gig

Word on which one we prefer?

To @Verge’s credit, she had Darnold on our radar as someone we would want depending how things went. sounds like post 49ers trade that got speed up and more expensive. Sounds like we negotiated the picks for a bit. I would like to know if QB is still in play and not off the table come draft like the GM said
-
I would wager Sam could find a way to look a lot better with the cast Baker had this year and previous ones. that’s the problem, we view Cleveland as a dumpster fire. It stacks up vs NYJ as a clearly better scenario. Baker had Chubb. Hunt. Landry. OBJ for a minute. Decent TEs. Solid D. That’s a really good spot for a QB in reality. Sam was in 2nd grade when Frank Gore was drafted lol. That should be a joke. Sam was literally in 2nd grade lol. Sam not having success isn’t a Sam problem. Well, not that we know of at this point. No reason they should of sniffed a single win this year.

Tannehill was still older at his youngest ....and wasn’t playing with 37 year old RBs, no WRs in a complete shitshow. I mean if Sam had success given his situation....he would be a GOAT. Maybe the GOAT. I honestly can’t name a comparable to his scenario. I just think he is a decent gamble. But just a gamble. would have preferred cheaper but....we need some lotto tickets

He played WR and LB in high school. Not having Trevor Lawerence mechanics is kinda expected. Lawerence has been groomed since middle school.

Well, I didn’t think Teddy the player had upside. Too old. We saw him in good spots. Was always the same dude. Darnold at least has the potential. again, he couldn’t even drink a beer when the Jets drafted him. He had no shot in that mess for success. He has a shot here for Brady to see what he can get out of him with legit weapons and good coaching. Darnold is close to the age Burrow flipped the switch with Brady. Darnold has some talent. -
Fun fact though and another difference. Sam Darnold today, is still a year younger than rookie Tannehill was.
-
It isn’t too much in a world where the rights to Mac Jones commands 3 first round picks.
-
I mean the GM addressed that today. Darnold doesn’t take a QB out of play in the draft. Why would he. it just gives them an option besides Teddy if things turn south and there is no QB they want....because they aren’t trading up (which is the smart call).

Darnold was actually a talented prospect coming in. Clausen was always a creation. I don’t hold the NYJ time against Darnold. Too comical of a shitty spot to act like that proved something. -
I think there is weird outrage. People wanted us to draft a QB and ditch Teddy. if we did, that means we still bring in another QB. Darnold doesn’t mean we can’t draft a QB if he falls to 8. But it means we have hope beyond just being stuck with repeating Teddy again if we can’t land a QB we want. Darnold might not be any better than Teddy. But he has potential to be.
-
I also don’t think Teddy is an example that the FO makes bad decisions. given the new offense and more importantly covid messed up and shortened the lead up into the season ....that move is what allowed them to get the O up, running and installed. Teddy was a short term move
-
Sam Darnold will have a better 2021 than Trevor and Zach Wilson. where you play matters. Darnold will be playing in a very good scheme, good coaching and with legit weapons. That matters. He has never seen such. also, the Jets were one of the most injury plagued teams in the NFL while Darnold was there. So hopefully we can avoid that. That impacts success too.
-
this isn't desperation. Desperation is spending 3 first rounders for Mac Jones. CMC isn't 37 year old Frank Gore. Rhule/Brady isn't the Jets coaching staff. DJ Moore isn't what he was throwing to. I mean, there was no way for Darnold to be successful in NY. He is a calculated gamble. If he was coming in with this class of QBs...he would be ahead of some in the top 5.
-
the market just said 3 first rounders was the cost to go up to #3 and draft a college QB. And that kid frankly, is no safer gamble than pulling Sam out of NY and trying him. given the current atmosphere. That is a decent deal. ESPN talking heads were shocked the Jets couldn't get more.
-
I'm not sure signing Sam Darnold means the Panthers couldn't draft a QB at 8 if one fell though. I mean, everyone assumed Teddy would/should go if we drafted one of these guys. So that means we were going to bring in someone else regardless.
-
the teams around Tannehill and Darnold aren't really comparable though. Tannehill's weren't great. But many of his teams looked pretty dang solid vs what we saw in NY. Especially this year.
-
I mean, the Jets started a near 40 year old RB last year. Got no talent at WR. Have horrible coaches. Sam Darnold sucked. He might suck here. But there was no possible outcome for any QB but to suck in NY.
-
I don't like the added 4th. BUT given how inflated the QB market has shown to be right now, it's not a bad price to kick the Sam Darnold tires. It's not fun, sexy and exciting. But that probably is the smartest move right now. You could still draft Fields if he fell. But now you don't have to be 49ers level stupid.
-
I don't think they would be willing to own the position of potentially giving us a franchise QB like Fields that could haunt them for a decade. For that reason, I think we are just removed as an option.

First half of the regular season, he had a 84% completion percentage and 11 TDs - 0 INTs. I mean to nitpick Fields' game, you have to basically on look at the 2020 COVID games. Outside of that he was arguably the best QB in college football the past 2 seasons. And you can argue that body of work when he was healthy was better than Trevor's. I still give the edge to Trevor but it is a legit conversation. And his body of work of high level play dwarfs anyone else not named Trevor. -

and his bad games only occurred when Ohio St was flipped on their head with COVID running crazy. 2019 he was arguably the best QB in college football. Started 2020 in the same position. Fields was absoutely nuts to start of 2020. Then covid hit. Then they got everyone back on the field and in practice....and probably had the best singular game we have seen in college football the last 2 seasons against Clemson. I toss out Bama because he was playing w/ that rib injury. Rib injury vs Bama and Clemson are to very different things. You could shoot up vs Clemson directly following it. Injury sets in after that. -

Fields could of sat all season and been pick 1b. Ohio St (Big10) only played because of Fields. Maybe not the only reason, but without Fields though, they don't play at all this season. athletes like Fields and Lawrence flexing their muscle/influence defiantly worked against schools doing what they preferred. Schools and athletics being distinguished in this convo. -

NFL Draft: No, Justin Fields is not a ‘one read’ quarterback (usatoday.com) There are some clips included in here. And kinda like Lawerence...when you can accurately hit your first read (and Justin Fields is the most accurate QB in the draft).....you simply make the throw. People out of boredom are simply using the fact Fields and Ohio St (when healthy) are lethal against him.
