With the possible exception of the Jets and Titans, 1) give me team in the NFL that would see an immediate improvement in their passing game if Bryce became their starter. What team would he make better just by having Bryce line up under center? 2) List 5 starting QBs in the NFL that are less productive than Bryce (injured starters do not count). Based on his career so far, I can't think of one team in the NFC with a starter that he could beat out in a fair competition. He wouldn't start on any team in the NFC East, NFC North, or NFC West. The only team that he could possibly have a shot at earning some playing time would be New Orleans b/c he never beat out Mayfield or Pennix.

Bryce is easily one of the 5 worst starting QBs in the NFL. You could take a starting QB from almost any team in the NFL, make him our starter, and our passing offense would immediately improve. I would love to see Bryce succeed. Our team has sucked for years and we gave up a fool's ransom to acquire him. That's one of the reasons I watch the games every week. I keep hoping that he's going to show something to justify taking him in the 1st round. After 2.5 seasons, I still don't see anything in his game that shows that he's a franchise QB. You really can't build a Panther team around Bryce's talent to win in this league. You need to build a strong team that's able to win despite limitations. A QB with that type of game is not worth $50 mil a year (the going rate for starting QB's on their 2nd deal these days). Carolina has a MAJOR DECISION to make at the end of his 3rd year. If his play doesn't DRASTICALLY improve over the next 2 seasons then then FO needs to part ways with him and find a formidable QB. If we extend him and he continues to play at this level then we will be in QB purgatory for the rest of the decade.

I bet there half a dozen guys sitting on the bench who could come and immediately improve our offense by outplaying Bryce Young.

I wouldn't give up a Day 1 or Day 2 pick to acquire a QB this season or the next. But, I'd wouldn't hesitate at all to part with a Day 3 pick (rounds 4-7) to acquire a serviceable QB wasting his career sitting on another teams bench if I believed he had the potential: 1) to complete 65%of his passes 2) Minimize turnovers 3) threaten all 3 levels of the defense 4) eclipse 200 yards passing on a regular basis.

Bryce is lined up in Shotgun on almost every passing play and you rarely see him drop back with his back to the LT. He drops back in a straight line which results in him having to use extra motion to make his throws. He rarely lets the ball go in rhythm when he hits the top of his drop like QBs are supposed to do in a well coordinated passing attack. For the record, I'd much rather have the 2023 Tampa offense than the 2025 Panther offense. We rank 23rd in points per game. Mayfield had 28 TD/10 INTS in 2023 and led his team to the playoffs. If Bryce put up number like this the Panthers would be a legitimate playoff threat. Baker had more TDs in 2023 than Bryce has in in almost 2.5 years as our starting QB. Bryce went number one over all, but there isn't a team in the NFL that would give up a #1 (or #2) in a trade to get him.

The Jets are winless this season & one of the few teams in the NFL with a starting QB worse than ours; and we still only won this game by 7 points. The defense played well, but our offense should have had the team well ahead in the 4th quarter. The Jets still had a chance to tie this game on their last possession. If the Jets had started Tyrod Taylor they very well could have won this game. This victory wasn't nearly as impressive as the last two.

Canlaes has a starting QB that is mediocre to average at best so he is limited and what he can call Young is somewhat effective passing the ball when a strong running game is able to keep the defense honest. When he rolls out he's able to see the field a better and at times he's able to have some success in the passing game. Young really isn't that good in any other situations. He can't play under center and turn his back to the defense like the other 98% of the QB's in the NFL. He too small to see over the lineman. And unlike small QBs like Doug Flutie and Kyler Murray he doesn't have cannon to launch the ball downfield. As one poster noted in another thread, when a QB can't threaten the defense at all 3 levels of defense you are limited to what you can call. I'd love to see what type of offense we'd have under Canales if he had Mayfield, Darnold, or Drake May under center.

Greg Cosell: Bryce Young is a complimentary piece

Not allowing Canales to bring in a legit QB to compete for the starting job would be yet another bad Tepper decision. We have to many glaring needs on defense so I would use that first pick on defense. If a promising prospect dropped into round 2 I’d take him in a heartbeat. If he was talented he probably be ready to start in 2027, and possibly sooner if the counties to improve on both sides of the ball. -

Tepper tends to make bad decisions, so I think he’ll probably at minimum pick up the 5th year option just to save face. I’d decline it if I were in charge. I’d let him play out the 4th year. If he excelled I’d consider franchising him to see if he could do it 2 years in a row. Only then would I even consider a long term deal. If he was insulted thats fine because I’d already have a potential back up already on the roster who I had drafted early in the 2026 or 2027 draft or acquired by trade. -

Eight of Bryce Young's nine wins have come off game-winning drives

It would be very UNWISE to extend BY at the end of this season. It would probably be UNWISE to extend him at all. In this market, his agent is going to want $50 mil per year minimum. You can't justify spending that on guy who is in the bottom 10 of the NFL in terms of production. We don't go into many games on Sundays thinking that our guy is BETTER THAN, OR EVEN AS GOOD AS, the starter on the opposing team. That speaks volumes and is a sign that we need an upgrade at the position. BY needs to start performing at an almost an MVP worthy level for consecutive years to justify that type of salary for a long term contract. -
If a casual fan didn't know any better, we could probably convince them that our defense has been instructed to simulate a pass rush but to not actually try to put the QB on the ground. It's been our biggest weakness for the past 2 seasons. It's the main reason I had reservations about letting Burns go. I knew we had no one on the roster to replace him and I had no faith in the front office to replace him via the draft or FA. My fears were justified. Does anyone on this board really think we'd be significantly better at this time if we had traded Burns for two # 1 picks in consecutive years and let Fitterer make both selections?

The above scenario is how teams end up in QB purgatory. Unless Young puts up MVP numbers for the rest of the season, there is no reason to "extend Bryce". The "most" I would do in that situation is pick up his 5th year option and control him for the next 2 seasons. If he played at a high level for the next 2 seasons then I'd consider giving him a big deal, but under no circumstances would I EVER make him the highest paid QB in the NFL. If he finished the season with numbers mirroring his first two in the league I'd decline his 5th year option, let him play out his 4th season, and draft or trade for a QB this off-season to compete with him for the starting job in 2026. If the prospect balled out I'd let Bryce walk and test the market. -

https://www.espn.com/nfl/stats/team/_/view/offense/stat/total/table/passing/sort/totalPointsPerGame/dir/desc Click in the link above and go to the last column on the right (Points per game). If you click on it you can display the stats from highest to lowest or lowest to highest. The Falcons are 2-2 and are averaging 19.0 points a game. No team under that has a winning record. That should show everyone why BY is 9-25 as a starter. You'll never have a winning record in this league if you can't average over 20 points per game. -

Does anyone have a stat on how many points per game the Panthers average when Bryce is starting? -
I view things in a similar manner. In the last 2 weeks we haven't played a playoff caliber team. We'll know what we really have on defense when we hit the harder part of our schedule.

A couple of years ago I heard former NFL player/scout/analyst Bucky Brooks give a great talk on QB evaluation. He said that you classify most starters into two categories. 1) Wagon Pullers: These guys make everyone better as soon as they get under center. They don't have to have elite skill position players or an elite O-line. As long as the talent is average/slightly above average they'll always have you in playoff contention. If you have great talent they make the team a SB threat year in and year out 2) Need the Wagon to pull them: These guys are game managers. Some are even a notch above that. They don't make a lot of mistakes and can usually keep you in games by not turning the ball over and making timely throws when needed. However, they need ideal circumstances: The WR need to be really good; the offense needs to have an excellent O-line to produce a good running game and provide solid pass protection. They also need a solid defense that keeps the team in games because these type of QB's are not built to oversee an explosive offense week in and week out. Bucky says you can win with both, but you have to know what you have and make sure you build a team that can work with the quarterbacks skill set. Too many players QBs in the NFL are being paid like they are wagon pullers, but they actually fall into category #2. When things aren't ideal their weaknesses quickly become evident. At this point in his career, I'm not even sure Bryce falls into category 2. Even with ideal circumstances, I don't think he would ever be able to lead a strong downfield passing attack that could stress a defense between the hash marks, and that restricts what an offense can do against teams with strong defenses.

Bo Nix led Denver to a 10-7 playoff birth in his rookie season. He had 29 TD's/12 INTs/93.3 RTG. He was picked at #12. Big Ben went at #11. Deshaun Watson looked like a potential HoF QB before the sex scandal and dispute with Houston management derailed his career. He went at #12. You don't have to pick in the top 5 to find a franchise guy. You just have to pick the RIGHT GUY and put him in a position to succeed. We had the 1st pick in the draft and blew it.
-
Good point. Too many my fellow Huddlers think that the only way to get a franchise QB is to tank a season so we get a top 5 pick.

If we were scoring 21+ points a games and losing because of our defense I know most of us could live with that. That would at least give a glimmer of hope that we’re only a draft or two away from being competitive on both sides of the ball. Our offense, the passing game in particular, is hard to watch. I feel like the Panthers go into every game overmatched at QB, the most important position in the game. You can’t win many games with a situation like that.

We can’t be too hard now, one of those did get us a first down. We have to remember that Bryce can’t push the downfield like most B-level quarterbacks. -
