I think he has more upside than Tremble or Sanders. -
Eight of Bryce Young's nine wins have come off game-winning drives

It would be very UNWISE to extend BY at the end of this season. It would probably be UNWISE to extend him at all. In this market, his agent is going to want $50 mil per year minimum. You can't justify spending that on guy who is in the bottom 10 of the NFL in terms of production. We don't go into many games on Sundays thinking that our guy is BETTER THAN, OR EVEN AS GOOD AS, the starter on the opposing team. That speaks volumes and is a sign that we need an upgrade at the position. BY needs to start performing at an almost an MVP worthy level for consecutive years to justify that type of salary for a long term contract. -
If a casual fan didn't know any better, we could probably convince them that our defense has been instructed to simulate a pass rush but to not actually try to put the QB on the ground. It's been our biggest weakness for the past 2 seasons. It's the main reason I had reservations about letting Burns go. I knew we had no one on the roster to replace him and I had no faith in the front office to replace him via the draft or FA. My fears were justified. Does anyone on this board really think we'd be significantly better at this time if we had traded Burns for two # 1 picks in consecutive years and let Fitterer make both selections?

The above scenario is how teams end up in QB purgatory. Unless Young puts up MVP numbers for the rest of the season, there is no reason to "extend Bryce". The "most" I would do in that situation is pick up his 5th year option and control him for the next 2 seasons. If he played at a high level for the next 2 seasons then I'd consider giving him a big deal, but under no circumstances would I EVER make him the highest paid QB in the NFL. If he finished the season with numbers mirroring his first two in the league I'd decline his 5th year option, let him play out his 4th season, and draft or trade for a QB this off-season to compete with him for the starting job in 2026. If the prospect balled out I'd let Bryce walk and test the market. -

https://www.espn.com/nfl/stats/team/_/view/offense/stat/total/table/passing/sort/totalPointsPerGame/dir/desc Click in the link above and go to the last column on the right (Points per game). If you click on it you can display the stats from highest to lowest or lowest to highest. The Falcons are 2-2 and are averaging 19.0 points a game. No team under that has a winning record. That should show everyone why BY is 9-25 as a starter. You'll never have a winning record in this league if you can't average over 20 points per game. -

Does anyone have a stat on how many points per game the Panthers average when Bryce is starting? -
I view things in a similar manner. In the last 2 weeks we haven't played a playoff caliber team. We'll know what we really have on defense when we hit the harder part of our schedule.

A couple of years ago I heard former NFL player/scout/analyst Bucky Brooks give a great talk on QB evaluation. He said that you classify most starters into two categories. 1) Wagon Pullers: These guys make everyone better as soon as they get under center. They don't have to have elite skill position players or an elite O-line. As long as the talent is average/slightly above average they'll always have you in playoff contention. If you have great talent they make the team a SB threat year in and year out 2) Need the Wagon to pull them: These guys are game managers. Some are even a notch above that. They don't make a lot of mistakes and can usually keep you in games by not turning the ball over and making timely throws when needed. However, they need ideal circumstances: The WR need to be really good; the offense needs to have an excellent O-line to produce a good running game and provide solid pass protection. They also need a solid defense that keeps the team in games because these type of QB's are not built to oversee an explosive offense week in and week out. Bucky says you can win with both, but you have to know what you have and make sure you build a team that can work with the quarterbacks skill set. Too many players QBs in the NFL are being paid like they are wagon pullers, but they actually fall into category #2. When things aren't ideal their weaknesses quickly become evident. At this point in his career, I'm not even sure Bryce falls into category 2. Even with ideal circumstances, I don't think he would ever be able to lead a strong downfield passing attack that could stress a defense between the hash marks, and that restricts what an offense can do against teams with strong defenses.

Bo Nix led Denver to a 10-7 playoff birth in his rookie season. He had 29 TD's/12 INTs/93.3 RTG. He was picked at #12. Big Ben went at #11. Deshaun Watson looked like a potential HoF QB before the sex scandal and dispute with Houston management derailed his career. He went at #12. You don't have to pick in the top 5 to find a franchise guy. You just have to pick the RIGHT GUY and put him in a position to succeed. We had the 1st pick in the draft and blew it.
-
Good point. Too many my fellow Huddlers think that the only way to get a franchise QB is to tank a season so we get a top 5 pick.

If we were scoring 21+ points a games and losing because of our defense I know most of us could live with that. That would at least give a glimmer of hope that we’re only a draft or two away from being competitive on both sides of the ball. Our offense, the passing game in particular, is hard to watch. I feel like the Panthers go into every game overmatched at QB, the most important position in the game. You can’t win many games with a situation like that.

I think you should at least a tryout. You can’t be that much worse than Bryce Young. -

We can’t be too hard now, one of those did get us a first down. We have to remember that Bryce can’t push the downfield like most B-level quarterbacks. -

Our QB can’t make that throw. -
Sometimes I feel like I've eaten one of these after watching the Panther's offensive and defensive performances week in and week out.

If you really want to change the identity of the culture, then your opinion may indeed be the way to go. 1) I see nothing from our drafts since 2020 to indicate that either the scouts or the GM's are shrew evaluators of college talent. 2) A new GM should be able to hire a coach since his livelihood is directly affected by how well the coach can get the team to perform on Sundays. The only time I'm ok with a GM keeping the coach that proceeded his hiring is if the new GM wants to work with the coach. Ideally, He should have final say over the coach instead of the owner. And, that coach and GM need to be in sync on how the team should be run on both sides of the ball. 3) A new coach should be able to pick his own staff. If he wants to keep a coach already on the staff that's fine. A new HC hire shouldn't be told that you have to use this guy for one of the jobs, especially a position as important OC or DC.

I lost faith in the front office during the 2021 draft. I was never sold on Justin Fields so I was ok with the Horn selection. We had a high 2nd round pick the next night. We were in desperate need of O-line help at almost every position. We traded down twice and picked TMJ who isn't even in the league anymore. Almost any lineman we picked that year would have improved the team. We picked a WR despite having DJ Moore and Robbie Anderson who had just signed an extension and was coming off of a 1,000 yard season. A couple of picks later KC picked Creed Humphrey who is now an All-Pro center and his position is still an area of need on this team. I knew then that these guys can't just look at game film and evaluate players. They're into RAS testing and trying to seem like their draft moves make them the smartest GM in the room.
-
I agree with this post. As bad as we were in 2023, that 2024 2nd round pick should have yielded an immediate starter at some area of need. But, even if Morgan still thought Brooks was "that guy", then he should have just red-shirted all of 2024 and give that knee time to fully heal for 2025.
-
No one on this board would have had the luxury of using those picks. I have not doubt that most of us could have made that scenario work. Unfortunately Scott F would have been the beneficiary of those picks. Based on HIS TRACK RECORD, do you really think HE would have used them to significantly improve the team? I do not which is why that deal really doesn't bother me in hindsight. We had the first pick in the draft in chose BY. Nuff Said.
-
It's hard to argue with that logic. I still think what we have now could get us us back to .500 if Tepper would admit that to himself that BY is not a franchise QB. He needs take the handcuffs off of Canales (and Morgan) and let them find a QB by any means necessary (draft, FA, or trade).
-
I wouldn't be upset if Evero left, but like Canales he get's too much blame IMHO. Only 2 of our 11 starters have to be accounted for on every play (Brown and Horn). The other 9 guys probably wouldn't start on a contending team. We traded away our best pass rusher at the start of 2024 and only this year did we draft 2 guys who could "possibly" to replace him. Our secondary picked off 9 passes in 2024. Kirby Joseph had the same total as a Safety in Detroit. We just don't have a lot of talent to work with in Carolina. That's why I think we should be playing anyone form the 24-25 drafts as much as possible to see what we have.
