This is why I am glad we had the head coach and GM there. Rhule values the cerebral players--players who can adapt to multiple positions, players that do not make mental mistakes. At the SR Bowl, he praised Jones for his processing. So if they leave NDSU with these questions answered, he could be the player we move up to grab. I wish he had more experience. The same people saying (about Jones) "Yeah, but he had a great team around him." should be saying that with Lance as well. I do not buy into that nonsense because if you have that great team and you perform at a high level, what were you supposed to do? The thing I like about Lance is this: He has the speed and running ability, but rarely do his feet move before he has made the decision not to throw. That (to me) reflects decisiveness--the QB has a clock, when the routes are not open, he snaps into run mode and the pass is not going to happen. With other running qbs, they tend to read while on the run, often throwing just before they cross the LOS. That creates problems for the WRs, OL, etc. Timing is off, linemen not knowing if they should block down field, and the throw is often less than accurate because the feet are not firmly planted to throw--usually all arm. Mahommes can do this, but I am not sure I want a 1 year, 20 year old kid from SDSU making those freelance (no pun) decisions in the NFL--at least not early on.

This is not a comparison between Jones and Lawrence---if it is, Jones had a better OL and WRs and he had the better numbers...So that does not prove Jones is not good. It proves that he did what he was supposed to do with a better team. 77.4% completions, 42 TDs, vs. 4 Ints. 349 yards per game--11.2 yards per pass attempt. Those numbers are as good or better than most all QBs--this year and many others. Those numbers are not average or even good--they are elite. So please tell me what numbers a great QB would have posted at Bama this year? Completion percentage: TDs in 13 games: Interceptions (13 games): Yards per game: Yards per attempted pass: Once we determine where the threshold for greatness is, maybe we can see this more objectively. I want to see what you think a great QB at Bama should have done this year.

I think we are going to use the cap to build the OL---and we should. I think other things too, but that is for another place and time.

But your argument is hypothetical. He had a great offense and he was a great QB. What else is he supposed to do? He completed nearly 80% of his passes. Some people don't do that at their pro days. He threw for 42 TDs vs. 4 Interceptions and Bama played as tough a schedule as anyone else. If he failed with the protection and weapons around him, this is a point. But he succeeded--better than Lawrence (who has a good supporting staff) and Burrow at LSU last year--(his team was pretty loaded). Not seeing that argument.

So basically, this is not a situation where 8 teams are going for 4 qbs. It is a situation where 10 teams are going after the remaining 2--possibly 3 QBs starting with the third pick. All picks will be given trade offers to move up. We will be sitting 6 picks out when Fields, Lance, Jones are atop nearly every board. Does a QB fall to us? Jones, probably. I doubt the other 2 do. What are the options? Trubiski is free agency. Watson in a trade. Trade up with Miami or Cincinnati. Never trade with a division rival, and make Atlanta choose between Fields and Lance--I bet they go Fields or they bail altogether and take the picks behind door #2.

If we are going to get serious about a QB and they like Lance much more than Mac, and they probably should, we will trade up. Jags--Trevor Jets--Wilson Dolphins (wild card--smart to trade back, but they could love a player and that could be a QB. Trade for Watson? Who knows?) Atlanta--Fields or Lance (while I think taking a QB now is dumb, they have so many needs and a decent QB under contract) Cincinnati (another Wild Card--teams will be giving them a lot for the #5 spot if a top 5 QB is on the board) Philly--possibly taking a QB or would trade back Detroit--Possibly taking a QB or would trade back Denver (9) SF (12) NE (15) Washington (19) all could try to move up from where they are. Here is where I sit on the issue of the TE issue, since most Huddlers are dying to know: There was a signing this offseason, Fitterer's first, that is probably more significant than people realize--and there was one before that that could be significant as well. Fitterer signed Stephen Sullivan, a TE on the PS taken in the 7th round by Seattle. So Fitterer had a connection. But maybe Fitterer was not the connection--maybe Brady was the connection. Sullivan was converted from WR to TE before his SR year at LSU. He is now 6-5, 248 lbs, and only 24 years old. Obviously, he could bring the position a pass-catching threat. In addition to Sullivan, we added Tommy Stevens, a former QB converted to TE who is now listed as a QB again. I think they will look at him as TE depth, special teams, and #3 QB. It just seems that we are more versatile and athletic at TE, and if Sullivan was Brady's call, we could see a glimpse of the TE position, which might explain how the #3 WR spot is more important.

Cant wait to see what he can do in that thing they used to call "preseason". I think the Panthers know what the have in the barn.
