Ask The Old Guy: Taking the next steps
MHS831 replied to Carolina Panthers's topic in Carolina Panthers
This is terrible. So lazy and self-serving. Sorry. I realize he can't speak objectively. -
I think it is a sign of quality cognitive processing when people who have been trained with propaganda and "alternative facts"point fingers and insult people by referring to political figures that they have been conditioned to hate--when the party they represent is going bat poo crazy. (this is related to an inappropriate comment on this thread that proves to me that some people should sue their schools for malpractice--that is all I have to say about it). Having said that, I think Dalton will give us some measure of normalcy to measure our team. The OL? check. The WRs? I think they could be good, but we don't know because the passes have not been arriving on time -- or at all. I think we need a stud TE (we need to run two tight sets that can create problems for the defense. Sanders could be one of them--a player who could be tough for a LB to cover, so they have to bring in their dime package (CBs) if we had another offensive threat. Now, with 2 TEs and CBs replacing LBs, our running game could be elevated. To me, it is a need, but we should be scoring 23-27 points a game if we had a good QB, imo.

It seems some house cleaning is going on. Wow.

I am guessing that Wonnum is coming back--or Barno. Not sure what their roster status is--but it seems to be move to get Leota on the PS

I agree to a point, but he showed "dawg." He could have folded after the first preseason game, and undrafted rookie playing behind a 14-year vet and a former first overall pick--but he got better. That is the point--his ceiling is lower, no doubt, but could he have been better than Bryce? You can't throw him under the bus because the team he played against had their second team in the game--a complete pass is a completed pass. And you can't say he was playing against scrubs when he was playing behind scrubs---but I would feel better about starting Plummer week three than Bryce. Sometimes the unknown is more appealing than the known quantity.

Had to be. Canalas would have looked like a quitter--the qb whisperer. I think the drop off in production, the boos in Panther stadium, etc. Another rich man worried about crowd size. Seriously, it was the right call. -

And the #1 sin, when talking to sources, never reveal information that is shared in confidence. Some might tell a good reporter, "expect some news on Bryce Young at the presser tomorrow, but keep that under wraps." Joe then would take that information and break a story, listing three possibilities (I have seen him do this, but I don't know that he breached insider info--speculating). Break that trust and you are done. As a reporter I was interviewing a college coach who greeted me with a left-handed handshake. Before that meeting, an assistant coach told me in confidence that the coach was in the early stages of Lou Gehrig's disease. He was numb on the right side of his body. At the end of the interview, I told him that I had heard rumors and expressed my concern for him and his family. He did not deny it, but I assured him that I am not going to repeat the rumor, and I sure as hell am not going to write about it. It would have been big for me personally. Probably a month later, an article appears in Sports Illustrated about it. The coach decided to break the news on his terms. He later thanked me for my support. It was a no brainer, but I can see how someone in the competitive world of journalism would have run with the story. -

Like a bird dog that becomes gun shy. My dad used to say they would either make the dog deaf or stop hunting with it. Brutal, but when you have 1 job and fear and insecurity become visible in your body language and performance, something has to be done. I imagine they will be making Bryce deaf later this week. -

He breaks news through his X or Twitter account. That should tell you. I remember a few years ago, there was a reporter for the Baltimore Sun (I worked in Annapolis MD for a newspaper there, and we saw one another at events--I talked to him, but he was a legend and I was me) and HE was breaking Panther news before Observer reporters. He had connections around the league, and there is an art to maintaining a good relationship with the teams you cover. he knew that art. Joe doesn't, apparently. -
He is not a big man and he is not a dawg. I agree with a lot of this and thank you for sharing thoughts based on real events and data. I disagree, however, with your statement about confidence. I think he lost it last season, which is why he escaped to video games and Netflix (not sure to what degree or for how long, but the fact that he made that statement is not what a true dog would have stated). Bryce is not an Alpha and he does not seem to love football, but I can't tell you what someone feels. His body language, however, was telling. Did anyone feel that the game was over when the Chargers scored first? I did. So maybe you are right in that Bryce's confidence is not the issue--it is the confidence the owner, coaches, locker room, and fans had in Bryce. I read an article --ESPN--that said the Panthers failed Bryce. Nope--they brought in WRs through free agency and the draft. They spent $150m on GUARDS. Their LT is a first rounder and their RT is a solid, established vet who makes $30m per season. Their RB played well during the two games. So how is this failing Bryce? If Bryce were a boxer, you don't say, "They should have given him 6 rounds." You see when he has no chance of winning, when he is losing more than a match. You throw in the towel at that moment. Plummer had 3 games to prove himself...Had he not had a good preseason game, he would have been cut. He stepped up. He did not have the courtesy of 18 games and 18 months--he made mistakes in the preseason in game one (remember Smith's "waiting for an Uber" comment?) and he corrected his mistakes. He is a dawg--does he have the skills? Not yet, but you can develop a raw dawg.

How did nobody catch this before drafting him?

It is about like dating a girl, dumping the girl, and then getting back with the girl. Just awkward, but it has happened before. I imagine they will see if there is any trade interest and then proceed. These past 2 games, with an improved WR room, stud OL, good RB, Bryce was the worst QB on record for 2 games. If you go back to the last two games of 2023, the offense he led scored 13 points in 4 games--that is basically a field goal. We wanted to see improvement--he got worse. -
Memories. I remember Hurney was going to pass on Cam---wanted to give Clausen more time. Was going to take the DT who went to Buffalo instead. RR insisted on Cam. Hurney was terrible, but he usually did what the coach told him to do.

The primary issue is -- was it the right decision? Not-- Who made the decision? Yes. It was the right decision--not only was the locker room in free fall, but the fan base was as well. -

He just sounds as if he has no inside info--he doesn't know the origin of the decision, but when he said, "Nobody makes any decisions without Tepper's blessing." I cringed. It is pure conjecture and its underlying sentiment was critical or negative. I used to work in the Sports department at the Charlotte Observer on weekends when i was in grad school. I was interested in journalism at the time, so I asked a lot of questions--mainly from David Poole, Tom Sorenson, and my favorite reporter, Rick Bonnell. I know what insider info looks and sounds like--Joe aint got none. But when you start making unsubstantiated comments as if you are in the know, that will hurt your ability to get interviews, info, etc. They will literally give that stuff to your competitor. Remember when Darin Gantt covered that "Pie Chart" news conference with the Panthers back around 2010. He pissed Richardson off, and the following week was assigned to Winthrop volleyball. It probably was Tepper's call--we all know that. However, the real issue should be, "Was it the right call?" I think it was. This was not about 2 games---Bryce has rarely shown signs of life and he should have demonstrated improvement. -

I like the kid and wish him well, but he's not a dog. He is an only child who rode a pretty narly wave until he wiped out. Now, does he get back on his board and seek another wave or does he paddle to shore because he got water in his ear? -
Bryce got benched, but the problem is still the problem
MHS831 replied to CRA's topic in Carolina Panthers
Dalton will help us identify the problem--while I agree with everything you said, Bryce has always won so his confidence has always been inflated. When he lost it, he lost the team and the ability to take the calculated chances all QBs take. That makes you force things, second guess, double pump, run from ghosts, etc. Maybe Dalton, who has experience in different systems, can help us realize where we need to begin. But brining in a QB to a dumpster fire is like putting a band-aid on a broken leg. -
Assuming it's done do you select a qb this year or wait?
MHS831 replied to Panthero's topic in Carolina Panthers
QB: You are constantly searching for the next franchise QB unless you no longer need one. Starting rookies is a bigger gamble than letting a rookie sit for a season or two. I realize that everyone wants that rookie contract, but familiarity with the NFL, the system, and personal shortcomings is huge. As a rookie, everything is new. Going back to High School, Bryce has always been on the most overpowering team. His line has always been better, his WRs have been better, and his coaches have been better. Mentally, he was not prepared for this. Physically, he finally found the level where his physical shortcomings could not be overcome. I expect someone will offer like a sixth rounder for Bryce and sit him as a backup. They will view his Bama tape and it will be worth the gamble. For us, I think he is gone and that needs to be done soon. Dalton is a stopgap who might have 2 seasons in him. I hope he plays well, but he buys you some time. Bryce was DESTROYING this franchise. People can stomach losing if there is hope for the future. -
I don't think, under any circumstance, you plan to take a player in 2026 in early 2025 as part of your long-term QB strategy. We go after QB until we no longer need one. That begins now, not in the 2026 draft. Here is the question: What do you do with Bryce right now? Dalton has expressed excitement for the chance to start and expresses sympathy for Bryce. This creates an awkward situation, like dating a girl when her ex-boyfriend is at the restaurant, staring at you, crying.

It's time to unleash Dalton. No more dink and dunk.

why now? We are in code red.... The Panthers traded with the Chicago Bears to acquire the 2023 No. 1 overall pick to draft Young, who is 0-2 this season. His Total QBR this season (8.9) is third worst over a two-game stretch since ESPN began using the metric in 2011. The Panthers have been outscored 73-13 the first two weeks, with their only touchdown coming on a scramble by Young that initially was ruled a fumble. The 60-point differential is the worst by a team in the first two games since 2019. Carolina's offensive efficiency rating (.70) through two games ranks last out of 608 instances for Weeks 1-2 since it was first tracked in 2006, and they have converted two of 22 third-down opportunities, worst in the NFL. This is WITH weapons and a stud OL -

Ward or Dart, depending on round. Ewers too hurt all the time Sanders is impressive but showed a lack of skill vs. Nebraska. Is he a team player or does he suffer from genetic meism. Beck plays behind a great OL and no longer has a great TE and Ladd. Struggled vs. KY--I think he is a second rounder who will be overdrafted in mid round 1. Milroe is rising, but when you play behind a great team, how good are you on a bad team?
-
Based on his answer, I do not either--my point was that his answer was confident and firm--he is not a waffler, to the best of my knowledge. Maybe he felt that he was wedged between what he needed to do and what they owner would defend--I dunno--but when they got together, Tepper supported the coach, not Bryce. I think we are on the same page--but it doesn't matter--we will never know.
-
exactly--good points. Canales might have been under the impression that he was expected to fix Bryce and that benching him after 2 games would seem that he was surrendering early, and when he met with Tepper he was given his blessing, but Canales did not flop in 24 hours. If his decision was based on the film, and I do not think it was, then he would have said, I need to watch the film.
-
Everyone is praising Canales for making this decision and I hope it is true, but I wonder. (I am sure this has been said--did not read the threads about this yet) but we have Canales says Bryce is the QB with confidence certainty--watches film--meets with Tepper---now says Bryce is benched. I hope it was not a directive from Tepper--but he was sitting in the stadium when the boos rang out during the first half of the home opener. I am not certain that Canales realized the level of frustration he inherited--or the length of the leash.
