I guess depth behind Brown (NT). He was terrible last year--and I am assuming that the pay cut does not make him immune from being cut.

Yeah Brown is a better fit to meet our biggest need. Wharton can come in and rush the passer--7 sacks? Pretty solid.

Reading tea leaves: The draft is pretty solid at DT (3-4 DE). I don't think Wharton, and Brown change the fact that we could draft one. Pat Jones does not eliminate a need at Edge. I think we will draft a pure pass rusher. We are still razor thin at CB. Getting Jackson back was huge for us, however. I am not sure how much they like Evans and Bartholomew, but both (especially Evans) played pretty well down the stretch. Good enough depth? Conspiracy theory: Draft Will Johnson and play Jackson at nickel. It seems to me that we now have 2 Strong Safeties. We need a free safety or two. I heard nothing about TE or WR today. Does that mean we will draft those positions? I really like about 4 Tight Ends in this draft, maybe 5. WR? I think the draft is more of a gamble, but I am wondering about TMac right now. The focus in free agency on defense makes sense. Evero has types and in free agency, you can match a skill set to your needs with more precision than the draft. The focus was on stopping the run, and with the exception of Wharton, every defensive player excels in that area. Pass rush is still a concern, imo.

I missed Tershawn Wharton. Just stumbled over it. Here is how I see the DE Milton Williams failed deal ($26m per year). The Panthers then sign NT Bobby Brown for $7m and DE Wharton for $18m. In other words, the Panthers get 2 solid players for $25m-- $1m less than the Milton contract. WHAT PANTHERS GOT FOR $25m (combined): DE Tershawn Wharton: 7 sacks, 68.3 pass rush grade. 44.3 run defense grade. NT Bobby Brown: 0 sacks, 67.7 run defense grade. Overall PFF rating: 63.3 WHAT PATRIOTS GOT FOR $26m: Milton Williams: 6 sacks, 90.0 pass rush grade. 43.1 run defense grade.

So Mike Jackson got a two-year, $14.5 million deal. That is a good length and amount. IMO, we need another CB. Smith-Wade (NB), Jackson, and Horn is not that strong and it is thin. Maybe we can draft one or pick up another. Man, this roster was bare.

SOOOOOOO.... The Panthers are already much better vs. the run than they were yesterday. First of all, Horn is a very strong tackling CB. Their new Safety Moehrig will terrorize the box. Our New Edge (Jones) will play the strong side and he and Moehrig will hold the edge and shut down those cut backs that killed us last year. And finally, Bobby Brown (NT) is not only a plug, he makes tackles. I am SO HAPPY that we missed on Milton (which is not to suggest that Brown was a consolation prize--different positions.)
