  1. Panthers 31. Saints 30 Why not Payton is 10 times the NFL Coach Rhule is but players play. Rhule needs to not get in there way The WRs and TEs have to show out this week…no drops, no miscommunications…I say that as they need to score not in the Redzone. This OL is not going to bowl anyone over from 10 yards in. Still, it’s a home game, it’s early and it’s Jameis, not Brees.

You don’t spit into the wind. And you don’t mess around with Sam, or with the “Keep Pounding” chant. The Carolina Panthers must return to issuing a prompt every week — from now until forever — to guide their fans into all chanting “Keep” and “Pounding” together. It’s a remarkable scene during every home game, as first one half of Bank of America Stadium yells “Keep” and then waits for the other to respond “Pounding.” The sound rolls back and forth in waves. The “Keep Pounding” chant is one of the Panthers’ most beloved traditions, and I can’t imagine why the team ever decided to mess with it. ADVERTISEMENT But at the season opener in Charlotte on Sunday against the New York Jets, there was no stadium-wide “Keep Pounding” chant. The Panthers still rolled out the oversized “Keep Pounding” drum and still banged it right before kickoff. Sam Mills’ statue still stood outside the stadium. But there was never a time when fans were publicly asked to scream the most famous two words in Carolina history. Why not? The Panthers’ reasoning was tepid. A team spokesperson told The Observer on Wednesday that the chant was never shown with a video-screen prompt because the Panthers have been experimenting with different game-day experiences. The spokesperson added that fans were always welcome to make the chant spring up organically on their own. “Keep Pounding is the fans’ chant,” the spokesperson said. “The fans own the chant.” DAVID T. FOSTER III • [email protected] The Carolina Panthers honor the phrase “Keep Pounding” on the drum that is banged before every game. drummer Jan Kuhn takes practice swings prior to the start of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs Carolina Panthers game at Bank of America Stadium on Monday, October 10, 2016 . Well, yeah, I suppose so. And in the past 15 years, I have indeed heard the chant organically spring up in lots of places, like at every Roaring Riot fan gathering, and on Mint Street as people dressed in black and blue walk to a big home game, and sometimes in small pockets of happy Panther defiance at road games when Carolina was playing well. But do you know how hard it would actually be to do a full “Keep Pounding” chant in the stadium without any sort of video guidance? Panther game = NASCAR race? I do know, because for the past three Panther home games (one regular season, two preseason) I’ve left the glassed-in press box and walked outside to watch a series or two and sample the game-day experience. And I know I’m getting old, and this is a very old-man thing to say, but good Lord, it’s loud.Often, it’s noise that is as artificial as the turf the Panthers are now unfortunately playing upon. Between the incessant music — usually, it’s good music, just cranked to 11 — and the PA announcer (absolutely blaring) and the various other pieces of game-day entertainment, I can’t imagine when there would ever be enough silence to get a full stadium “Keep Pounding” chant going without some guidance and, more importantly, some silence. Whoa wait, y’all weren’t screaming #KeepPounding before kickoff & in game? I know traditions can change & sometimes get replaced but “Keep Pounding” holds A LOT of meaning. With dads cancer, it meant so much to still get the Keep Pounding reminder from panther nation. https://t.co/TSPNmU32F9 — Courtney Rivera (@NFL2Ucla) September 15, 2021 You have to yell to the person two seats away just to be heard over the loudspeakers. I have seen some little kids in earmuffs on my sojourns through the stadium and I always think to myself: “That’s smart. I’m proud of your parents.” The Panther stadium noise level is frequently like going to a NASCAR race. Now all that noise shouldn’t disguise the fact that the Panthers are indeed trying some new game-day stuff, and they absolutely should keep trying it. Most of it is working. DAVID T. FOSTER III • [email protected] Former Carolina Panthers player Jordan Gross prepares to hit the “Keep Pounding” drum, joined by Steve Smith, Sr, Wesley Walls, and Jake Delhomme prior to a game in 2019. The Panthers have a cool new mixed-reality Panther now that will appear at every home game, creating great cat videos, as well as two excellent new “hype men” and several male cheerleaders who have also been added to the large contingent of female Top Cat cheerleaders. All of that is laudable. In general, the Panthers’ entertainment division does a good job. But let’s not pull the mask off the ol’ Lone Ranger, as Jim Croce once sang. And, again, don’t mess around with Sam. In other words, you can try all sorts of new stuff without dropping the old stuff. The Panther fans who noticed the disappearance of the stadium-wide “Keep Pounding” chant were right to be perturbed. ‘Keep Pounding’ chant will be used Sunday Before we go further, let me make sure you know that the Panthers say they will use the “Keep Pounding” video prompt again for fans Sunday when Carolina hosts New Orleans at 1 p.m. But they haven’t yet committed to doing it at every home game this season. Maybe they will and maybe they won’t, their spokesperson said. It sounds squishy. But believe me, I already know how this one ends. They will use it. For every game. Because on Sunday, when the Panthers prompt the fans to scream “Keep Pounding,” the resulting chant will blow a few windows out uptown, and the Panthers will realize: “Why did we ever think we shouldn’t do that?”
  3. I gotta say. Attending home games since 2002, this opening game this year was a clusterfug from police barricades on the roads to trying to get food and there were no condiments for the food if you could get food to some of the pregame music with lyrics little kids shouldn’t be hearing (even I watch my language in stands when kids under 10 are around me) to the top cats looking like they needed to be on a pole, dancing to some questionable lyrics, again, fine if there aren’t little kids around To the lame, obnoxious rally guy’ trying to force people to cheer to the PA system being so loud it was deafening and everything everyone else mentioned I’m not kidding It was incredibly loud net was not the same at the stadium it was lacking in class and precision. Some is covid of course but it wasn’t close to the well oiled machine it used to be pro sports, it’s the product in the field at the end of if the day but outside of the animated panther and flyover and usual salute to service, more annoying being there than not maybe it was just opening day malaise but they did have two preseason games to get this corrected
  4. The ‘hype guy’ at the stadium is absolutely the lamest and most annoying thing I have ever seen at a sporting event, any sporting event
  5. Then why draft him If Rhule values conditioning and versatility, that’s not Brown
  6. Panthers must have zero brain farts …no dropped passes, no missed kicks, no stupid penalties No dumb ass coaching mistakes No punting from the 33 Rhule has to be a NFL coach, not a Div 1 coach …of everything, that to me is the biggest concern I can’t stand Payton and I feel he should have been banned forever for that bounty crap but he is 20 times the NFL Coach Rhule is …that, to me, is where this game is won and lost….can Rhule Snow. Brady match up against Payton and coaches in game plan ..and that is probably why the 3.5 point spread something else too, putting in that turf, helps NO and Atlanta, they play on it…they don’t play on it, however, when it’s a 120 degrees on it which it surely will be Sunday with the temp at 90 and humidity at 70 plus Maybe that helps the Panthers ill be there and if there is one team I despise above all others, it is the Saints
  7. Lol exactly and that has to be the stupidest chant in the NFL.
  8. Yep. Read it was about 120 on the field and that’s brutal my seats are in the shade on panthers side 35 yard line but even though it said 86 on the scoreboard, I felt pretty bad for the people on the sun side I can’t imagine how hot it was for those players in pads down there
  9. In the NFL, 50 yard kicks are normal these days Rhule routinely trotted Slye out for plus 50 kicks.
  10. That’s kinda of how the stadium felt, that was a bad decision, but when you are in the stadium you don’t always know what the decisions are or why …so thank you and everyone
  11. I was at the game yesterday Couldn’t believe the decision but I never heard the rationale fot it could someone share it please? thanks
  12. The message that coaching punt decision sent with the ball on the Jets 33 yard line, not a good one …the same with not playing for 4 quarters the Saints will offer a true barometer on the Panthers and Rhule and staff Payton has owned the Panthers for years and I hate that bastard and the Saints and their fans
  13. Exactly right next week, we will have a much better barometer on Rhule and his staff Payton is the real deal in pro football ….hate the bastard though I do….
  14. Exactly right I don’t care if he says ‘as shucks’ around his Momma i care about winning
  15. It is interesting how writers see this team I’m expecting 7 and 10 as well. Hope I’m wrong
  16. https://www.derp/2021/9/8/22661693/nfl-carolina-panthers-boldly-specific-win-loss-prediction-for-the-2021-season?fbclid=IwAR26uS4aWAFaGo31pPliAFxW-zZU6sZ3Gx8JYQXigfcesNcMyJmmXtFysh4 It’s that time of year again for each of us to predict the Panthers record before the season begins. Last year I predicted a 5-11 record in Matt Rhule’s first year and I nailed it. While I accurately guessed the Panthers five-win season I only correctly picked two of their wins - Week 11 against the Lions and Week 16 versus the Football Team - when looking at my week-by-week predictions. Here’s my forecast for the 2021 season. I’m now officially on the record that the Panthers will go 7-10 this year. Now it’s your turn to do the same and put your win-loss predictions in the comments. Week 1 vs New York Jets - Win (1-0). There’s no better way starting off a new season than a home game against a rookie quarterback and a new opposing head coach. Meanwhile, Sam Darnold is pumped up for the ultimate revenge game. As a BYU alum I’m the co-conductor of the Zach Wilson hype train - along with Tony Romo - and the future Hall of Famer will throw for 365 yards in his NFL debut but still wind up with the loss. Week 2 vs New Orleans Saints - Loss (1-1). Yes, they’ve lost Drew Brees, but the Saints still have a talented roster and a top coaching staff. BYU’s Taysom Hill will replace a shaky Jameis Winston in the second half and lead the Saints on a game-winning two-minute drive. (Okay, I’ll stop with the BYU homerism). Week 3 at Houston Texans - Win (2-1). The Texans without Deshaun Watson could very well be the worst team in the NFL. Jaycee Horn’s first career pick-six is the turning point in Carolina’s first road win of the season. Week 4 at Dallas Cowboys - Loss (2-2). The Cowboys deep receiving corps shreds the Panthers corners while Ezekiel Elliott reminds us Jermaine Carter Jr. isn’t the long-term solution at middle linebacker. Dallas scores somewhere between 35 and 42 points in a blowout win. Week 5 vs Philadelphia Eagles - Win (3-2). Carolina returns home to win a 13-10 defensive slugfest featuring lots and lots of punts. Brian Burns records 2.5 sacks as the Panthers defense bottles up Jalen Hurts. Minnesota Vikings - Loss (3-3). This one hurts. A back-and-forth contest ultimately goes to overtime where Ryan Santoso misses a field goal before the Vikings seal the deal. Week 7 at New York Giants - Loss (3-4). In a matchup between two equally below-average teams, the Giants ride the home crowd to a 28-27 win. After two frustratingly close losses in back-to-back weeks, Panthers fans lament how they could just be sitting at 5-2 instead of 3-4. Week 8 at Atlanta Falcons - Win (4-4). Christian McCaffrey exceeds 100 yards both rushing and receiving as the Panthers put together their most complete game of the season in a blowout win on the road against a division rival. Week 9 vs New England Patriots - Loss (4-5). Rookie quarterback Mac Jones outplays Sam Darnold and Panthers fans start to justifiably criticize GM Scott Fitterer for drafting a cornerback at No. 8 (Jaycee Horn) over quarterbacks Justin Fields (No. 11) and Jones (No. 15). Through nine games Darnold has proven to be good enough to keep the Panthers competitive, but not great enough to be their true franchise quarterback. Week 10 at Arizona Cardinals - Loss (4-6). Carolina loses a close, entertaining, high-scoring road game between two fairly evenly matched teams. Week 11 vs Washington Football Team - Win (5-6). Despite having a top tier defense, coach Ron Rivera dials up an uber-conservative game plan which allows the Panthers to keep things close until late. A late Washington punt from inside the Panthers 50 yard line sets up Carolina’s game-winning drive. Week 12 at Miami Dolphins - Loss (5-7). Carolina goes on the road and drops a tough game to a Dolphins team that is on course for a double-digit win season and a playoff appearance. Week 13 - Bye week Week 14 vs Atlanta Falcons - Win (6-7). Coming off the bye week the Panthers coaching staff responds with a great game plan. Sam Darnold passes for over 300 yards, Christian McCaffrey gets over 200 scrimmage yards, and the defense sacks Matt Ryan six times in a 17-point win. Week 15 at Buffalo Bills - Loss (6-8). Carolina gets manhandled by the “Panthers North” as Josh Allen’s name is in the thick of the MVP discussion and the Bills are gunning for a first round playoff bye. Week 16 vs Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Loss (6-9). The defending Super Bowl champs are locked and loaded on a championship repeat. The Panthers fight hard but lose a close one at home to their more experienced, more talented NFC South rivals. Week 17 at New Orleans Saints - Win (7-9). With the playoffs out of reach, a host of Panthers fans will be annoyed when Carolina wins against the Saints because it will hurt their 2022 draft position. But Jameis Winston will throw four picks in this one as the Panthers defense rises to the occasion. Week 18 at Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Loss (7-10). With playoff seeding still on the line, the Bucs pick apart the Panthers for the second time in three weeks. I’m not overly optimistic about the team this year because of a shaky offensive line and I don’t view Sam Darnold as an above average quarterback. The combination of poor protection for a ho-hum quarterback will largely negate the talent of Carolina’s solid skill players. Defensively, the front four will be solid but the linebackers and secondary will generally struggle in coverage. Panthers opponents will be able to pick apart the defensive with underneath throws and screen passes that neutralize the pressure the front four will generate. But for now, I’m just happy Panthers football is back! I hope they prove me wrong and have a much better season than the 7-10 record I’m predicting. Nothing would make me happier than at the end of the season for me to admit, “I was wrong.” Keep pounding!
  17. Yeah, that’s not saying a lot if he is our ‘best interior lineman’ and he could infect others in a very close physical sport frankly, if I’m the owner of a billion dollar sports team, I try and find a way to move him I can’t see risking 51 other players plus all the staff for a guy that wouldn’t be third string on a decent team.
  18. One thing about overriding the big boss, you (in this case Rhule) best be right
  19. The Jets HC, along with every other HC, will blitz and pressure Darnold all day. The film throughout Darnold’s career doesn’t lie
  20. Matt Rhule ‘trust the process’ hard to believe his limited time in the NFL was with the oline. oh well
  21. Depressing it will be very interesting as tape shows how ‘pass rush’ adverse Darnold is…happy feet etc. Don’t know if he has ‘David Carr’ syndrome or not We will find out soon enough In Darnold’s favor, lesser competition first couple of weeks but expect Saleh to bring pressure often
