A little insight on the Hakeem Nicks story

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Is there anything to back it up?  As mentioned, Nicks can say anything he wants since the Panthers don't discuss contract details.

Remember, it was also Nicks who said that Dave Gettleman suggested this wasn't the best spot for him.

So you are suggesting that he is a liar? That's pretty absurd Mr. Scot.

The lengths to which some will go to make Gettleman look better are truly astounding.

Why does there need to be? You either believe him or you don't. Personally I have no reason to believe that he was being untruthful.

He wouldn't be the first guy to claim he turned down a big offer out of pride, when in reality the offer was either minimal or nothing.

Bottom Line: Conflicting stories at the time and the Panthers won't say, so that's all there is.

So because someone says something that you don't particularly like, your first response is to call them a liar?

That's nice Mr. Scot, real nice.

Nicks never actually said anything that I "didn't like".  I was one of the people that didn't really care that much whether we signed him or not.

As I recall, you were one of the people who was actually against us signing him.  But now that he's gone elsewhere you want to pound Gettleman for it.

So which is it?

I was against signing him to a big contract, that was before we cleared out our entire WR corps. When his value began to drop, and the only receivers we had on our roster were McNutt and King, yes I was fine with the idea of bringing him in on a reasonable contract.

Nobody is "pounding" Gettleman here. Good grief.

But I'm "going to great lengths to make him look better" right?

I have no personal feelings about Gettleman at all, but I do agree with the majority of the decisions he's made and I can see the rationale behind most of what he does.  A large part of that is probably because I'm a little older than many on here, so I'm used to being patient and waiting for things to develop.  That, plus what I've learned about football didn't come from playing 'Madden'.

We've had some utter ridiculousness this offseason on this board, primarily over the Steve Smith thing, and some folks chose to run around screaming panic.  Those of us who didn't get accused of silliness like being Gettleman homers, when in reality we prefer the term 'adults'.

Randomly insinuating that someone you've never met is a liar based on absolutely nothing doesn't quality as "going to great lengths"?

Nope.  Not at all :D

But for the record, did I actually do that, or is that just your spin on it while playing your usual 'contrarian' role?

For reference, here's what I actually said...

(assumptions are) probably all we'll ever have.

At the time, there were stories that we'd made an offer and others that said we had no interest.  No way to know what was really true.

The Panthers don't discuss contracts or contract offers.  Nicks could say we lowballed him or say we offered him the moon and there'd be no way to corroborate either story.

Speculation is all we've got.  But hey, it's a message board...

"Great lengths"?  Yeah, sure

Hey what's this here.

I like to call it "a question".

If you look back at the statement quoted in the prior post, you'll see it fits in nicely.

It's usually responded to with an answer (the correct one this time being "no") but yuo chose to go a different route.

I can't hear your voice over the sound of you backpedaling. What's that?

Backpedaling...yeah

Still stand by everything I've said, but thanks for illustrating that it's easier to argue with someone's statements when you misrepresent them.

    • if  ANYONE actually goes & looks at the FACTS on rookie Qb's after 2 full seasons as a starter in the NFL & they are still well below average do they rarely ever actually become top tier Qb's & instead most likely either do not recieve a second contract & or become life long backups...just saying
    • So he became GM and decided not to address the weakness in the QB room following one of the worst rookie QB performances in NFL history?  There were options last season other than signing Dalton to a 2 year deal. Brissett and Jones by a wide margin, both of whom outplayed Bryce, Wilson, Winston, hell even Rivers off the couch was more exciting at the QB position. The time to address the failure in the QB room was last year but instead people on the Huddle cheered when we brought Dalton back then cheered when we were able to get anything for him after they finally realized he was washed up like a few of had been saying all along and got poo'd for even mentioning.  This year, the options were more limited obviously, especially since we lost Icky. It changed the dynamic of our draft. I think we were stuck this year keeping Bryce, but i still think giving him a 5th year option for what has amounted to replacement worthy performance was the wrong move. Why guarantee 25m if you're planning to replace him? You think he's going to want to be a bridge QB? Hell no. He's going to want out and we'll end up cutting him if he has another lackluster season because no one is trading for him with that price tag.  Were there better options as far as production available. A couple. Were there guys available with more physical tools than Bryce, Pickett or Grier, you damn well better believe there were. I've been saying all along, you always keep looking for your 1b. Bryce has yet to prove he can be a starter. Keep looking for someone who may. Put competition in camp. Let the best QB lead the team. Stop settling for less than mediocre.
