Leafs Preparing Offer For Eric Staal

Recommended Posts

According to Darren Dreger (who is full of sh*t a lot of the time), the Toronto Maple Leafs are putting together a trade package for Eric Staal.

The base of the trade would include Nazem Kadri or Tyler Bozak (my preference would be Kadri), then a young roster player (possibly Morgan Rielly or Jake Gardiner), and a top end prospect (only Frederick Gauthier fits into that category).

With that said, would you accept the following trade... Nazem Kadri, Morgan Rielly, and Frederik Gauthier for Eric Staal.

To help you understand what this would do to our current roster, I posted a potential depth chart.

Jeff Skinner - Jordan Staal - Alexander Semin

LW? - Nazem Kadri - Elias Lindholm

Frederik Gauthier - Riley Nash - Patrick Dwyer

LW? - C? - RW?

Andrej Sekera - Justin Faulk

Morgan Rielly - RD?

Jay Harrison - John-Michael Liles

Ryan Murphy

Anton Khudobin

Cam Ward

So... do you do this trade or no?

Note: The only players mentioned were Kadri and Bozak. However I inferred from the criteria that the Canes would ask for Rielly/Gardiner and Gauthier.

If the Leafs idea of a young roster player and top end prospect is Carter Ashton and and Josh Leivo then I'm hanging up the phone immediately.

If the Canes trade Staal, they will be without a number one center for at least the 2014-15 season meaning we better get a hell of a return.

I just read that Morgan Rielly is considered untouchable. If that's the case I wouldn't do the trade.

Gardiner is good but to me he's the best bottom pairing defenseman in the league. I wouldn't want him in our top four.

For Staal who is a 70+ point player year in and year out it would have to be Kadri, Rielly, and Gauthier or Kadri, 8th overall pick, and Gauthier or I'm walking.

People forget that just a year ago Staal led the league in 5 vs. 5 scoring. Maybe the line of Tlusty, Staal, and Semin can get it going again next year.

    • It's definitely a historical issue at QB but to be perfectly blunt, we also don't do a good job of really developing almost any position if you look at the last decade or so. I tend to be on the side of that being far less a development issue than an evaluation deficiency.  I think we are in the situation at QB2/3 recently due to the overall roster being absolutely abhorrent and the QB classes being quite thin. It is harder to justify another Matt Corral(or several) when you can potentially get a real two deep contributor at other positions.  But, it was a lot of hard work to get to the point where are roster is so incredibly bad that luxury picks literally are not in our vocabulary.  This is the reaping what you sow portion of our history.
    • That is what I meant about our front office. They are like someone filling out a March Madness bracket based on preference of uniform colors and mascots. There's no rhyme of reason to some of these fugg'n mind numbing decisions they make.  They go all in on these flimsy-@ss prospects and are gun shy when it comes to more solid prospects.  It's literally maddening and the reason I stopped being so emotionally involved in this team. Heck the only reason I'm active on the board today is one, it's my day off and two, it's cut down time.
