Check out a NC bluegrass band on YouTube called Carolina Chocolate Drops.....they're not your traditional bluegrass band but the music is very good and original.

One of my favorite bands is Rage Against the Machine....When I get the urge to rail against the establishment - I just turn them on and turn it up.

The Chocolate Drops are indeed excellent but I must point out that they are not a bluegrass band. The term Bluegrass has become a catch all term for all kinds of music but in actuality it refers to a very specific formulaic sound that was created by Bill Monroe in the late 30's and early 40's and was in fact named after his band The Bluegrass Boys.

The Chocolate Drops play music that is much much older than that. The term is Old Time and it is kind of a catch all term that describes old ballads, string bands, early blues and a few others. The Chocolate Drops hark back to the old black string bands that were common place in the late 19th and early 20th century and are indeed excellent.

I don't mean to come off as a snob but as an old time musician myself it irks me when old time music is confused with commercial bluegrass even though 90% of the world does it.

I described them as "not your traditional bluegrass band" because I wasn't exactly sure what classification they fall under....All I knew is I liked them. LOL. I like all kinds of music but really wasn't sure what to call the Carolina Chocolate Drops. They aren't exactly Bluegrass but isn't really folk music either....I wasn't familiar with the category "Old Time" so bluegrass was my closest guess. Thanks for letting me know.
