Cam and Russell pressure stats this season: the raw numbers

I am not blaming Newton for the start this year. Not at all. Newton is what he is. But since you bring up numbers, here they are:

Cam Newton is

26th in completion percentage

22nd in yards per attempt

21st in NFL passer rating

18th in yards per game and

17th in total QBR

There is plenty of finger pointing and hyperbole thrown around on this forum about other parts of the team, from the owner, GM and coaches to the offensive line, defensive line, defensive backs, linebackers and even running backs and receivers.

Guess what: Cam Newton has not been that great either.

Cam has been pretty great overall this year. GB being the lone off game.....a game that was over before he had a shot and his line played bad in as well.

Comparisons are not apples to apples. Comparing pure stats of a QB behind a bad OL, no rush attack and no downfield threat vs a QB who has it all.......is such a slanted and biased take

There is no way I would call them average. Nearly every media pundit agrees they are in the bottom 5 OLs in the league this year. The only reason they are ranked 15th in pass protection is bc of sack %. That largely falls on Cam's ability to stay upright. But he has no time to step into throws which is a big reason we have no big plays to Wrs this year. Just no time for them to get downfield.

I never actually said Carolina's offensive line was average.

I said the pass blocking has been average...and I base that on sacks plus QB hits, plus having watched every game this year both in real time and in rewind.

Statistically, sacks and QB hits are a very good indicator of how quickly the opposition is getting to the QB. Not a perfect indicator, but a pretty good one.

Certainly there have been low points...IE Pittsburgh...there have been high points as well...Cincinnati...but when you look at the season overall and compare the performance with that of other teams...this unit has been about average as far as pass blocking is concerned.

I agree with the assessment of the O-line being in the bottom 5 in terms of run blocking. But even there it must be considered that for much of the season we have been handing off to players who really have no business getting carries.

I will hang my hat on the 3.7 yards a carry Williams and Stewart are averaging between them when healthy. That being said, the run blocking is definitely below average. I would say bottom 3rd in the league.

The unit overall is definitely not a strength and improvement is needed.

But there are teams in the NFL that are succeeding offensively with very similar offensive line performance. This team can win games behind this group.

I'm speakin my mind buddy not stating fact. If you wasn't so fast to jump to a conclusion maybe you would've noticed that

I'm not jumping to conclusions lol You're mad cause you have no logic behind your belief in DA. Thats why you said "Who cares" when i asked you why you have so much faith in him.

I've done told u forever ago. His accuracy his stance in the pocket. DA can throw the ball in a guys hip. An cam makes ppl jump for it or even throws the ball so high no one can catch. Cam is on when he is on but when he is off we get blown the heck out. No fun to watch.

Cam isn't the sole reason we have gotten blown out 3 times this year.

I actually only used Newton's and Wilson's names in the original post because it seems like unless the magic words "Cam" or "Luck" are invoked, posts often seem to fall dead born from the keyboard despite the merit of the idea involved.

As it was, I limited my comparison to a very narrow portion of what is surely a team stat: sacks and QB hits.

The OP was never intended to be a comparison of Wilson and Newton as QB's...it was simply an attempt to point out that Carolina's offensive line is not nearly as poor as some would like to believe. That is my belief based on what I have seen and backed up with the most relevant statistics available.

You don't have to agree with me. The vast majority of the posters on this forum will never agree with me. Some have accused me of being a Troll because I don't often post and when I do it is generally controversial. That is primarily because I see no need to post on topics that everyone is in agreement on. What's the point? Rah, rah, sis boom bah...who cares...the bandwagon is always full...I don't need to jump on board.

In a couple of hours this thread will be gone and everyone can go back to saying we have the worst offensive line in the history of football and the worst defensive backs in the history of football.

And then you can all rage about how Rivera and Shula and Gettleman need to be fired even though we are 3-3-1, 20-8-1 over our last 29 games and are entering the last 9 games of the season where we play exactly one game against a team with a winning record.

    • I mean, I hear what y'all are saying, but Derrick could have been positive without being negative.  He essentially accused people of not seeing Bryce's improvement because of their desire to not be wrong. He could've kept it about Bryce and the team. For example, he could've said: "Bryce has made strides, and we believe in him. This coming season, his continued improvement will turn a lot of people into believers."  That would've been supportive of his teammate and sent a message to the doubters. That being said, his tact almost summoned and left the door ajar for more skepticism. That's my take anyway. Bryce has improved from the bottom to perhaps skirting the line between the bottom third and mid-third at best...after three seasons. We've all seen it. Yay! In my mind, Bryce has still got a long way to go and a short time to get there, but my expectations are top five--at least top 10--always! Yes, I am a fan, so there's that, but I don't believe it's unreasonable to expect excellence. Hopefully the Panthers FO has the same mindset (and that doesn't even necessarily have anything to do with what we gave up to acquire him). That is the lens I'm looking through. Derrick Brown has his homer glasses on. He just needs to be more diplomatic and thoughtful with his words in my opinion, but I get it that he's a good teammate.
    • I have no doubt the Canes will come out like gangbusters, huge bounce back from game one - my only concern is Freddie, if he lets in a couple of softies and Dobes stays hot we could be in trouble.
