Rivera Admits He's Been Nervous-Per Jeff Darlington NFL.com

On NFL Network television early this morning, Jeff Darlington was interviewed in one of those quick segments from Carolina practice for the upcoming Panther playoff game.

We've all heard how Ron Rivera and the team are calm now?

Well, maybe this is how they got there? Darlington mentioned that Rivera told him, he felt his 'team wasn't currently practicing for Arizona seriously enough in his opinion.

He continued, when Rivera went and looked at the Arizona practice film, he realized the team WAS practicing seriously, professionally enough, and concluded maybe HE WAS THE ONE that was nervous and hyper (Rivera himself) about the upcoming game. Yes, Darlington relayed this.

Darlington noted, Rivera proceeded to reflect upon last years San Francisco playoff game as a reference point/learning lesson that he didn't want to repeat. Rivera, felt one of the reasons his team lost was because they were all too hyper then.

Currently, Rivera feels both he and his team are in the right place and their calm, ready for this weeks playoff match. He say's they feel good (as many of you heard). .

First off: I'm glad Rivera admitted this. Because since he recognized it; hopefully it's been corrected (as he's indicated). Cause I for one, feel Rivera's nervousness has translated to his team during big games; Rivera/Newton's second season when he was greeted with higher expectations; anytime the Panthers start to receive media hype/attention; his infamous bye record-when he has time to think games, and night games to name a few.

I pondered writing this post, cause I know some of you feel I'm biased and I have it in for Rivera. I don't.  Hell, if Cam and Benjamin can be routinely criticized by overzealous fans here, you don't feel Ron Rivera can? :startle: Come on now? I, and others, judge him simply as an NFL Head Coach. He's got some strengths; yes. However, he's learning, and has some obvious holes and weaknesses in his coaching and team management as well. That's been well documented over the  years.

Ok enough/Saying all that: I feel the Panthers are going to play a good game this weekend......Shoot! I feel they have as good a chance as any,  to advance far in the playoffs; no matter who they play (damn you national media, commentators).

Good Luck Ron. I hope you're correct.  Free Cam and the offense (the pass rush and secondary as well). :thumbsu:

Note sure if there's an accompanying article on NFL.com to link?

Sorry guys. I meant "NFL Network". Early morning post. Lol

Doesn't make sense.

vs Atlanta:

"You guys weren't hyped enough!"

After game: "You guys were hyped, I was the one too hyper!"

vs SF last year:

"They were too hyper!"

He can't have it both ways. He either wants them hyped or not (they should be hyped). I can see why the players have looked confused before.

I read it as by "previous game" he meant previous PLAYOFF game, and nothing in what the OP was talking about was referring to Atlanta last week.

Then that still doesn't make sense.

He first thought they weren't hyped up. Then later decided they were hyped up. Then said the reason they lost was because they were hyped up. WTf does he want them to do? =

No. Darlington, was speaking, about the Atlanta game last week, or the upcoming game against Arizona.

San Fran last year, was used as a reference point to fall back on.

Basically, Rivera felt his team wasn't practicing hard enough (from the game last week, or the practice for Arizona). Then, when he looked at the film, he realized his team was. So stated, maybe he was the one that was nervous or hyper.

SanFran, was used as a reference point, where being too hyper caused them a playoff game last year, including himself.

It's not about whether he's nervous or not (he should be).  It's about whether he lets it affect his performance, which he did in last years' playoff game.  Sounds like he's learned from it, and I sure hope he leads the team more effectively this year.

No, Previous game would have been vs Atlanta last week.

San Fran, was used as a reference point/learning lesson by Ron for upcoming playoff game.

Rivera, thinking the team wasn't playing or practicing hard enough (when they were), was him acknowledging, maybe he was the hyper one.

Still confusing to me. I'm coming off 2 hours of sleep too. Maybe that's it. Am I the only one confused?

It's 8 in the morning, I'm not going to begin to try and decipher what the hell is going on.

Mainly cause I have no idea what the hell is going on.

I thought a few days ago Rivera said he and the team were relaxed?

Yes, Rivera said he and the team are now relaxed.

However, Darlington mentioned he got to that point, realizing he may have been hyper (thinking they weren't practicing well enough). When Rivera realized they were, he noted maybe he was the hyper one that needed to calm down.

Like I said, not how I read it. I don't know why you felt the need to tell me how you read it when I acknowledged that in my post.

    • That's my biggest concern with making him the 2C.  You split up the Aho Jarvis bromance that accounted for a lot of points.  If Jarvis excels as a C, it could help the team even more though.
    • The Saints being that high is the one that killed me. Chris Olave might not know his name at this point, Shaheed is coming off injury as well, so 31 year old Brandin Cooks might be your best WR...coming off a 260 yard season over 10 games. Kamara is Kamara, but didn't have 1,000 yards last year and is about to turn 30.  Toss in the fact that Taysom Hill may be the best QB on the team and I truly don't understand Barnwell's thoughts beside seeing the names "Olave" and "Kamara" and going yep, that sounds better than "Chuba" and "Thielen".
    • Now now now, I wouldn't say there is no logic, but there's just not a lot of in-depth thought put into Barnwell's  "analysis." Now to be fair to him (and other national writers), pre-season team rankings are basically clickbait. And...Barnwell, himself, said that "there's a lot of projection here." He basically admits that he doesn't know how the hell things are going to turn out with our receiver group. He also said that "I find myself" more intrigued by Coker than Legette; that does not mean that he said that fans should be, or that Coker will even be better than Legette (regardless of ESPN's per-route-run stat). So, yeah, Barnwell said some things, but even he has to basically admit that he doesn't know how bad or good that our playmakers will be in 2025.  Overall, what Barnwell is basically thinking is that the Panthers have gotten worse at the offensive skill positions, and baked into that is that others have gotten better. That's the argument in July (meaning, please don't give this any more weight than it's due). I would personally be surprised (not shocked) if we end up worse than the Titans, Pats and Giants at least. Once you throw in the Bills, Giants, Jets, Steelers, and even the Chargers, I personally think there are several teams' skill groups that may end up ranked lower than ours by the end of 2025.  @kungfoodudeis one of my dudes, but like others he is over the tipping point. He's had enough. Seeing is believing. I will say this though: Barnwell's piece is less about logic than just good ol' opinion. And to be honest, he might as well be a Huddler throwing out sh¡t in the summer based upon nothing but good feels or bad feels.  Our offense as a whole (just like any other team's) is going to depend upon the play of the O-line and especially the QB. How you can even rank the skill positions without expressly baking those two things in the cake is beyond me. I would dare say that that's not even logical.
