Isaac Asimov Appreciation Thread

We have a lot of SF movie/show/game threads on here.  If you're a fan of Blade Runner, and anyone smarter than a twig is, and movies of that style, and you aren't familiar with Asimov's robots books, you owe it to yourself to go start reading them all right now.

 

Blade Runner is adopted straight out of the Robots series.  Don't let the craptastic movie that was 'I, Robot' scare you away.  There is zero, null, nada, zip, 0, similarity between the movie and the book.  They don't even have the same names for the characters.  Hollywood just paid for the naming rights, and then took a giant poo all over the legacy that is Asimov.

 

He effectively invented what we now call science fiction, and then when you realize that he wrote I, Robot in 1950, you'll see just what a visionary he was.  He is the one, the father the god of science fiction.  I've been re-reading his books lately, and thought that those unfamiliar with him need to become aware of just how awesome he was.  Interesting note...the lead character in I, Robot was born in 1983.

I agree Asimov is awesome but Blade Runner was based on Philip K Dicks' "Do Android Dream of Electric Sheep".

yes, it was officially based on that novel, but it was published in 68, almost 20 years after I, Robot, and there are many elements from that story that come straight out of Asimov's work, eg robots working off world on projects humans can't/won't do, robots being outlawed on Earth, humanoid robots coming to Earth, exploring the psychology of race relations by looking at human prejudice against robots, etc.  Asimov set it all in motion.  65 years old, and it's still relevant.

i'm one of the few that loved the i, robot movie... i went to sleep with it on many a night while in high school

Philip K Dick was crazy brilliant. I would throw in Richard Matheson as well. He has lots of his works turned into films but doesn't get much of the same notoriety as Asimov or Bradbury etc.
