You don't think Newton is capable of being primarily a passer?

Gimmick quarterbacks don't win Super Bowls. Making him a pocket passer first doesn't negate his run threat. It sets him up for pro success while keeping him healthy. And the run threat is still there, just not as his primary focus.

I've seen enough of Newton to believe he can accomplish this. Do you disagree?

I think what makes Newton special is the physical mismatch and ability he has at the QB position.

He isn't a gimmick.  As Cam says, the NFL has never seen a Newton.  Yet, large percentage of fans want him to play the game in a traditional manner. Letting him be a mismatch isn't a gimmick.  No one in NFL history has been equipped to attempt what Newton has ability/potential to do.  Asking them to attempt to be Cam would be a gimmick.

And if you want to talk about Cam being a heavy pocket passer....do it when you don't give him Bell and Chandler as Ts with a brand new red corp or a slightly upgraded OL throwing to dudes like Philly Brown.

Do I think he can odd from the pocket? Sure.  Do I want him being largely a pocket passer? maybe at 30....not now.   If we ever gave him a solid team? He would be an offensive monster.

I'm in the camp our fanbase and staff over states how good the O around him is.   Even when we improve it the talent still doesn't classify as "good".  Talent he had played with each season (injury preventing this year from being an improving over last ).....has been worse each year he has played IMO.

so to be clear...YES Newton has the ability to be a legit pocket passer.  Talent limits how that is perceived.  You want him to hit his ceiling and reach his potential? He remains a dual threat.

You expect him to just flip a switch and become a pocket passer at 30 if he hasn't been practicing it before?

What's you're missing here is that they don't want to take away his other qualities. They just want to make sure that first and foremost, he's a passer.

And yes, that's what it takes to win in the NFL. Newton could be the greatest running quarterback ever and it still wouldn't be good enough unless he can also pass.

No, but you don't have to cut his legs out either to make it happen.  Need talent around him mainly....which we still don't have.  Also, at 30 he should only be down graded to a Steve Young load.

Get Cam talent.  That is my stance.  Otherwise, it doesn't really matter.  Peyton Manning makes people around him better....but Peyton has been throwing to crazy good talent for his career.   Having talent let's you grow.  Talent is part of the equation to a QB growing his game IMO.

Seems to me people just expect Cam to become an elite passer behind a iffy OL, with little traditional rush game, and weak WRs....
