One of the greatest quarterbacks ever...

...may be getting benched.

On Friday, 49ers coach Jim Tomsula made it clear that Colin Kaepernick isstill Tomsula’s quarterback. To assume that this means Kaepernick won’t be benched is to presume Tomsula has the final say on the issue.

He most likely doesn’t.

If, at some point, the organization decides that Kaepernick isn’t the answer in 2015 or beyond, the smart move would be to get him off the field and to put him in a layer or two of RGIII bubble wrap. Kaepernick’s contract still has more than $31 million guaranteed for injury only; thus, a career-ending injury during what would be the garbage time of his 49ers career would end up being very expensive to a team with a growing reputation for being extremely careful with its money.

The franchise’s sensitivity to its dollars and cents prompted a term requiring Kaepernick to buy with own money an insurance policy that would pay $20 million not to him but to the team in the event of a career-ending injury. Still, that leaves more than $11 million for which the 49ers would be on the hook if Kaepernick suffers a catastrophic injury over what could be the final nine games of his time with the 49ers.

Which means that the “something big” to which Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com alluded after Thursday night’s embarrassing loss to the Seahawks could still be a benching of Kaepernick — even if Tomsula is the last one before Kaepernick to find out about it.

Kaepernick's contract could contribute to benching

    • He’s also 21 years old. I don’t know why fiz is so eager to label him a bust
    • It’s wild to me that so many of you guys are threatened by the idea of an opposing team fan who is polite in 2025. He’s been posting here on and off for years, usually when our teams play each other which hasn’t been for a while. I’d maybe understand this treatment if it was a falcons or saints fan, but packers fans in general are one of the nicer fan bases as long as you aren’t another NFC north team (especially the bears).
    • Some players excel on the big stage, while others freeze and succumb to the pressure. I’m not convinced Cam took a dive. I think he didn’t handle the stage very well. The pressure got to him and he folded. He wouldn’t be the first quarterback or player to struggle in a Super Bowl. Two HOF examples - John Elway and Jim Kelly. The 2002 MVP, Rich Gannon, threw 5 interceptions against the Bucs. Poor performances happen.  Unless of course you believe all these players threw the games they played in, but if that occurred, surely someone by now would have admitted taking a dive? 🤷‍♂️
