I asked a couple weeks ago about the direction of this team.

I guess we got a realistic look at it today. I am a big believer in you are what you are. We played a fellow playoff team from last year, in our own house and got blown out in pretty much every phaze of the game.

It's just preseason.... Oh wait, its not.

I am thinking this offseason would have maybe been a time to start 're tooling'. We have enough pieces in place to not 're build' but we should have re tooled. There were some decisions made by the front office we questioned this offseason so its not hindsight I am saying these things.

Peppers should have been traded somehow. I can only presume Hurney just asked too much. Delhomme should NEVER have been extended.

So now what? The Defense still can't tackle nor get constant pressure etc. Seems Meeks might not have been the best hire after all. Jake is still Jake. Fumble for a TD and 4 Int's. All off a sudden this 'one of the greatest lines in the NFL' looks like a high school team. Special teams didn't fare will either with the big return.

Add to all that, the front office issues with the Richardson boys being booted. Not good folks. I am a fan, have been since the day I heard the Panthers would come to life, and I always will be. But something I am not is a blind homer. I don't believe in sugar coating things and can see when a team is not good. Right now, this team is NOT good.

You know Jake's extenstion was for cap room right?

Why? Because they wouldn't move Peppers. As for as Jakes contract extention, I want to know how much was Signing bonus and how much is guaranteed. That will tell you how long he will be our QB.

Here is what really sucks...we can stink it up this year and get screwed further by not having a first round pick. Not having that pick is another offseason move I have questioned.

They couldnt move peppers because he never signed his tender......

... because Hurney wouldn't work with him on trading him to a team he wanted to go to. With all the cuts the Pats made this offseason, I guarantee we could have moved him. Hurney demanded two firsts and no one is going to pay that then pay peppers 100 million.

So you have to say is taking up over 16 million of my cap when I am tight against it worth it. Hurney said yes. The results say no.

    • Like many of the old heads, I’ve been here for a long time.  I got a lot of respect for everyone on this board for your dedication to this team.  We’ve all been through it during the tougher years. At this point in life, I’m not one to judge anyone’s level of dedication, or their reasons why anymore.  Time, and a lot of bad football, will do that.  For me, it’s simple.  We share a common bond.  For that, I love and appreciate all of you crazy SOB’s. For me, last season was at a minimum, entertaining.  BY lead a young team to multiple come from behind 4th qtr wins.  That showed me heart, and that he has the clutch gene.  That’s the wildcard intangible.  For me, that was fun to watch even  if it was mindbogglingly frustrating at times.  Over the past two seasons, we have progressively built a better team around him.  On paper, the defense should be better this season.  That’ll help.  Let’s see what he can do as the other guys continue to develop too.  Besides, his contract is cheap for a few more years, and we just made some smart cap decisions during the draft. Let’s see how it shakes out.
    • Hiring Shula & his Cam save us playbook.
    • I would very much liked to have seen Jake Delhomme's career if Tommy Jone no hurt Jake.  I just know that roster and the leadership were destined to hit paydirt but Jake was never the same after the elbow injury, and unfortunately he was the sole reason they didn't make it back to the big one.  I think that 08 team was the best in the league, and Jake masked his inability well all season til the Arizona game put it all on display.  I'll go back to the season prior even and say the 07 team was primed to be a competitor.  Jake was off to a fantastic start that year (for a Panthers QB).  They may have been a championship caliber club for a few seasons after 08 too.
