Did you go to a Checkers game at TWC? It's built for basketball, not hockey. The Islanders have wanted out of Nassau forever and already they are regretting the Brooklyn deal because Barclay's and TWC are essentially the exact same arena.

The issue is team performance and  (someone correct me if I'm wrong) but I believe they no longer offer mini packs of tickets, which really helps for weekends.

They have a favorable lease and the fans are there, they just need to give them a reason to come back. I think they will, but the new FO has to clean up the mess they were given.
