Interesting comments by another coach...

These comments were made my Broncos rookie coach Josh McDaniels and the only reason I came across them was that I was doing research for fantasy football (trying to decide on starting Nate Burrleson or Eddie Royal). The comment wasnt directed at the Panthers at all but I thought they sum up what has been the problem with the offense for years, namely the passing game.

"That creates turnovers," McDaniels said. "Defenses would love that if you would force the ball to one guy 10 or 12 times every game. They are double teaming him, and you are still throwing it to him. You are stacking the line of scrimmage on defense, and we are still running it. I don't think you can play good football consistently trying to do it that way."

This comment was made in regards to 7 different receivers catching passes last week for the Broncos. I doubt any coach will honestly tell you that they don't have a number 1 receiver but I still thought the comment was enlightening and I thought it described our situation perfectly.

Thoughts?

If anybody has advice on who to start and why feel free to comment as well.

Sorry. We just don't have enough receivers that are as good as Smitty. Moose takes a close second, but Jarret and Kenny just don't have the experience. They will both be special someday (We've barely scratched the surface of their potential), but Smitty just makes them all look like poo in comparison at the moment.

Good suggestion, but this game is just too damn important to put on the shoulders of a second stringer.

Oh jeez I wasn't suggesting we do that. I was just stating that is the reason why we can be so inconsistent in the passing game. If you shut down Smitty then thats all she wrote. I thought we did pretty well spreading the ball when he was out last year. I'd like the tightends to be more involved and I think Smitty can beat double coverage any day but he's right, turnovers are bound to happen.

We wouldn't know the talent of any of our other receivers. Jake never looks their way to begin with.

Ah, good point. He did have a decent connection with Jarrett last year on third downs but it hasn't been explored all that much. I really think Moore has a chance to make some crucial catches, I think if we study the film throughout the year we will find that Jake just doesn't look their way. Don't know if thats by design (coaching) or my disfunction (QB).

    • Bryce has been in the NFL 3 years and still looks like a very mediocre QB. Most games are nothing but mediocre plays with a highlight reel every now and then.  He is a very INCONSISTENT QB and it’s very fustrating. He does not deserve a 5th year option, even though the Panthers and all the dumb asses in the front office will give it to him.
    • I’ve rarely ever been more sure of anything than losing out — but how can anyone say with a straight face “Bryce hasn’t improved, but Canales has and he’s masks his flaws”. You have to be so out of touch with reality to put one way above the other when discussing those two.
    • Last night was the classic example of a visiting team just holding on through the wave of emotion a home team has at the start of a big time game. Bama’s first two kickoff returns really set them back as far as playcalling and allowed OU to dictate field position. The emotion of the home crowd fed into what OU was doing at that point, and it felt like Bama would not be able to overcome that.     Once the kickoff returner was told to fair catch every kick, the game shifted, as Bama wasn’t starting each drive inside their own 15. It was then that Bama was able to make some plays, outscoring OU 34-7 the rest of the way.  I think the last 3/4 of the game proves Bama was the better team. OU was just able to ride the initial wave of emotion to a big lead, but Bama held on just enough.  However, had OU blocked the punt on Bama’s second drive and scored a TD (vice a FG on the ensuing drive), things likely would have been different.  Anyway, Roll Tide!
