I've always wondered what minority coaches think of the Rooney Rule. I can't imagine walking through the door wondering I'm there for my talent or for my skin.

You made me think of this...

I have been a regular member of this site since before the server crash and normally don't post unless I feel I have something to contribute that's worthwhile. Please don't take this post as being racist because it's not meant to be. I personally have a problem with the Rooney Rule. I understand how it is supposed to get more minorities involved in coaching throughout the league, and that minorities haven't traditionally had a large part in coaching in the NFL. I am of the personal belief that you hire the best people available to make your business/team successful regardless of race. The owners and front office have no problem doing it with the athletes they bring into their teams. There is no way they wouldn't do it with coaching as well. Bringing in the best people makes you successful...bottom line. The Rooney Rule may actually hinder bringing in coaches who would make a team more successful if your racial makeup isn't currently on par with the rest of the league. I'm not saying that white coaches are better than minority coaches, but that the competitive nature of the NFL as a business creates a natural demand for hiring the best.

To add a few stats to the argument..The current makeup of minority players is 71%, with white players making up only 29%. Imagine the product we would have if the NFL instituted the Rooney Rule in reverse for the athletes, making it more racially balanced. It's certainly not fair that there are less white players playing than minority players, but the reality is that black athletes are bigger, stronger, faster on average than white athletes. The same system of economics that applies to athletes naturally would apply to coaches, or the teams wouldn't be successful/profitable. Get rid of the Rooney rule and quit making race an issue.

You've completely missed the premise that just mayyybe stereotypes prevent people from even being in consideration so the rule is basically forcing teams to actually sit down with a human being to talk to them and understand them before being so dismissive and assuming they aren't qualified for a position based on appearances.  There's also an ugly stereotype that people of color are somehow not as intellectual as others, and this does manifest in hiring practices.  And yes, we are very segregated as a society that there are many people who still think this way.

I hate the rule and that is is something that had to be implemented, but the way of thinking that it is attempting to eradicate is the problem, not the rule itself so first acknowledge and understand the reason, and then offer a solution.

The argument that the "most qualified is hired" is a farce.  It could be true if everyone was given an equal opportunity at an interview, but false if you think that the people doing the hiring are able to see past their own personal bias (they obviously haven't except for our Panthers.  This is why affirmative action was implemented.  Because there are glass ceilings, bias, stereotypes, and plain old racism/sexism/anyotherbias that prevents people who are well qualified from even being able to sit down.

So again, you're right.  You hire the best qualified person regardless of race, but if you overlook people because of race even if not intentionally and done subconsciously, have you really hired the most qualified person?  No.

Anyway, in closing.. seeing our team leading the pack and being on the right side of being progressive and having the most diverse and inclusive staff in the country makes me beam with pride.  We are a world class team, and we are also the definition of cool.  There's a reason that people are hopping on the wagon every second.  #gopanthers!

You looked at their receiving corps?

Yeah really. One of the last times we played them, it was complete opposites. Panthers had 3 white guys on offense (pre-Remmers), Patriots had 3 black guys on offense.

Patriots are the Duke University basketball team of the NFL.

    • Rags lost again. All is right in the hockey world.
    • He’s responsible for two drafts classes. The first was one of the worst drafts I’ve ever seem. The second one is showing a ton of promise. I’m somewhere between skeptical and hopeful on Morgan.
    • I'm a big fan of Dan. His ability to find productive players deep in the draft will pay off.  I'm going to give him 1.5 draft classes right now, because I do think it's a little unfair to evaluate his first year when he got the job in January, especially when we went into that draft not having a first round pick.  XL and Brooks are still big time TBD players. Both still have incredibly high ceilings, but both have also given us legitimate reasons to have a lot of pause. Trevin Wallace, Chau Smith Wade and Jatavion Sanders have IMO outplayed their draft position early in their careers. That's a great thing. He also got Coker and Demani Richardson as UDFAs that year. Given the situation we were in, I really don't mind the gamble on the high ceiling guys. Still may work out, still may not, but if you made a checklist of ideal situation for an NFL GM to walk into, ours was near the bottom of that list.  Every single 2025 pick is contributing in some way. That typically doesn't happen. I am absolutely blown away by this draft class 6 games in. Even the best GM's miss on occasion, and we can't expect Dan to be 100% on drafts moving forward. Ryan Fitzgerald was an excellent find as well.  Comparing our last two drafts to the previous few is pretty shocking. Can you imagine this season without our Rookies? It would not be good. Additionally, this roster only has 6 players with more than 6 years of experience, and two of those are specialist.  The next step is equally important, and still very much TBD. We have to avoid Cap Chaos.
