I said all along that that was a major reason that Norman needed to suck it up a bit and GET a contract done here one way or another. Creates a much better legacy, keeps him relevant on a perennial playoff team and would generate greater endorsement revenue in the long run.... He didn't listen. Proud of Cam for seeing the forest for the trees and realizing that he could be so much more by not going for the biggest pay day possible.

Eh, I don't blame Norman.  Norman isn't Cam.  I think he did the smart thing going for the money grab.

Cam and Norman's earning potential away from the game have never been comparable at any point in time

Maybe. But corner backs will not likely get the same type of endorsements as a QB. Just the nature of the game and the positions. DC is a much bigger market than Charlotte, and a personality like Norman could really reap the benefits if he can continue to perform at a high level. Probably not on a national scale, but locally he could make a killing.

RoarinRiot and I had this conversation recently. Cam has been extremely smart in his approach to his finances.

He signed with a good team long term for less money than he probably could have gotten if he held out. Why? His football salary will be his secondary source of income. Cam will make more money from licensing and endorsements than he ever could in the NFL. Better to make less money on a perennial superbowl contender and reap the long term benefits from that exposure.

It is the Michael Jordan model of pro athlete finances, and only a national figure like Cam, Lebron etc could pull it off.

Fascinating. good info

    • yeah, now it's going to get awkward.  The team circles pay attention to all this stuff.  All the wives and girlfriends see the posts.  They all talk like everyone.  Football is just a normal world outside of the fact they play a game for lots of money.  Gossip travels. They know the Theilen's want out at this point.  Carolina is now the disappointed failed trade location.    So now AT takes sort of an inhouse hit in Carolina IMO
    • Ummm... The dude looked like he was about 180 pounds soaking wet with us (I don't care what his listed weight was/is) - he would have been destroyed in the run game even more than our current and past crappy ILBs. The problem is we primarily play 3-4 or nickel/dime - there is little room on the field for him because he isnt an edge LB blitzer and he can't cover for crap. The only thing he can do kind of well is be an in-the-box safety that can try and beat blockers to the spot because of his athleticism. Washington was able to make him work last year because they used him solely as an in-the-box safety and almost exclusively ran a single high FS. The funny thing is they had good yards/game stats against the pass despite most of their secondary having embarrassingly low PFF grades. Washington was also terrible against the run, which might explain why they gave up so few yards passing.
    • Just get the deal done. We've teased it so much that the Thielen's expect it. Now we run the risk of our veteran WR locker room presence becoming disgruntled. Just take what we can get, make him happy, and get future assets while freeing up snaps for guys who will be here beyond this season.
