This offseason: Groupon Gettleman, or does he go all in for big splash FAs?

Upgrade Boston and CJ resign Short to a reasonable contract, if not Star is a must to resign if Short walks, I still wouldn't mind a veteran CB.

Remmers needs to go, he's no Hangman so keeping him around for depth shouldn't be an option, Kalil's replacement needs to be a priority and for the love of god we needs some speed in the skill positions.

Forgot we need another TE.

This Off Season will make or break Gettleman for me because he has a fugton of work to do.

Sure there is - tons of cap space for the first time in his Carolina tenure.

Exactly. Gettleman needs to use Free Agency to set up the draft. What he can't fix/upgrade/add depth to on the roster with Free Agents whose skill, age and cost make sense then must to be addressed in the Draft.

God speed Dave, make us proud.

Okay...so what do we do when we need to fill other positions on the roster? We just spent 28M on a guy, but he can't play every position.  Wait, maybe he can?  This isn't Madden man.  We're not saying G-Man has made the correct decision with every FA pick-up, but there's a market for a reason.  If we low ball all of these guys, they'll just go to another team to get their measly 3M.  At that point, we're really screwed.  Although it sounds like you'd be okay with having a few people with 28M contracts and the rest for around vet min or a million.  It's just not feasible.  Plus, every GM does the same thing with the exception of a select few.  Unfortunately, you only hear about the loud GMs who like to make a splash but then nothing comes of it except for cap hell.

$3M is not measly. You do not understand the financial structure of a roster, and paying $3M for the same production a team can get for $1M or less is simply bad business.

There are 2 philosophies among GMs when it comes to distributing the cap space. Gettleman believes in the 50/50 philosophy. I believe in the other philosophy where a team invests most of the cap in 12 core players and then surrounds them with draft picks under rookie contracts and value players that produce with limited snaps for $1M or less.

Instead of the previous players listed, you invest $25M in 3 to 4 core players that are expected to make a substantial impact. Then the other 3 to 4 players you get for $3M or less. Kyle Love instead of Paul Soliai or Palardy instead of Lee are examples.

Understanding valuations and investing money are not Gettleman's strong points.

Have you guys looked at the free agent market this coming year?

Eric Berry would be a great pickup. Of course, everyone should expect the Chiefs to franchise him if they can't resign him. Probably not realistic to expect him to come here. Aside from that, I don't see much out there that would be helpful.

A 37 year old Julius Peppers?
Or how about a grossly overpriced and wildly inconsistent JPP?
Here's a list: http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/

Also, if you look at the limited range of options for offensive line upgrades in free agency or the draft (weakest OT draft in a long time), it's pretty clear we need to bring back Remmers. He's not great. He's not even "good." But we'd be better with him than without.

    • I do think the rating is fair given how this unit hasn’t proven it with production. I understand you have to rank off production, not potential. However, our unit is also in a position to make this rating look foolish a year from now. We have 4 guys in the WR/TE room who all could legitimately take the next step this year, and catapult our rank. A guy under a lot of people’s radar after we took Tet, Jalen Coker. Mark my words, he will become the star of this room, and be the heir to Thielen.
    • Exactly. You’d think 2-7 wins a year (in a 17 game season no less) since 2017 is going to keep us bottom tier. Every year we say the same poo like we haven’t been a bad team the past 7 years. Until we prove we aren’t a bottom dweller, that’s where we’ll stay ranked. God forbid we have OL injuries like 2016.
    • What I love and hate about this team is it’s more filled with potential breakout players than ever before. JT, XL, Coker, Smith-Wade, Ikem, Trevin… and even Bryce are all guys I could legitimately see taking the next step. But the problem with having so many of those guys is that team success somewhat relies on them taking that step, and some are bound not to. That being said, I’m cautiously optimistic given our softer schedule, the way the offense clicked late last year, and the direction we finally have at GM, coach, and QB. Could see us as a sneaky playoff team.
