“It is a foul if a player lowers his head to initiate and make contact with his helmet against an opponent,” the new rule says, according to the NFL. “The player may be disqualified. Applies to any player anywhere on the field.”

McKay said the NFL’s research has found that a large number of concussions happen on plays when a player lowers his head, and that banning such techniques will make the game safer.

Until we see the precise wording of the rule, and how strictly the officials enforce it, it’s hard to say how big an impact this change will have. But with the NFL now imposing a 15-yard penalty for a technique that we’ve previously seen often in football, this sounds like it’s going to have a major impact on the sport.

1. I understand the player safety aspect here and I sympathize and agree with it.

2. Lowering your head in preparation for contact is something both ball carriers and defenders do in anticipation of contact.  I'm afraid this rule (as is noted above) is going to have a TREMENDOUS impact on the game and the vast majority of that impact is going to be negative.  And by that I mean its liable to make the game unwatchable.

3. How are players that have used this instinctive, almost-unconscious technique all their lives going to train the instinct to lower their head in anticipation of contact out of themselves?  Personally, I don't think it can be done.

4. At this rate, unfortunately, I think the game of football is beginning its death-throws.  They are slowly but surely making the game unwatchable and, when that finally hits the tipping point, the professional and college games are going to collapse on themselves, because the money will then be GONE.  And that is the lubrication that keeps all those gears turning... $$$.

All they have to do is require that football be like Rugby,..

meaning if you touch a guy, you have to wrap or attempt to wrap tackle, period.

if you just run into someone like many do in football that’s a penalty.

all kinds of things would stop just changing to that,.. rugby gets few concussions and they play with no gear.
