Hurricane Florence

just for reference, katrina was downgraded to a category 4 when it made landfall in louisiana (apprx 140 mph winds)

right now, florence is hovering between a catg 2 and 3, currently at 110 mph's with 130 mph gusts.

the main concern with this one is the torrential rain and inland flooding, but even 110 mph winds can cause devastating damage

lets see what happens in the next few hours

Katrina was actually a 3 when it made landfall.

If nothing else I'm going to be stuck in a small ass house with several other people for the next several days... might not be able to leave the house until Monday or Tuesday. At least we're on high ground and not close to any rivers/streams/powerlines

Only thing I'm worried about is we have two big trees in the backyard

The flooding was what defined Katrina....hope this one doesn’t do the same to us

Comparing the Katrina flooding to this is no comparison.  Apples to oranges

Nola is built below the water, the storm surge of that massive storm destroyed the levees and let the river flow into the city

This is more like a Harvey.  Harvey did the same.  Harvey was a strong Cat 3 when it hit Corpus.  But we all know it for what it did to Houston.

It went back out and just sat om Houston as a tropical storm for a few days

This is not even a Cat 3 anymore. It's a Cat 2. And could be weakening again.

Close friend is in Raleigh. I've spoken to her a bit and it seems her family is staying put. I wish they'd evacuate but whatever. My ex wife is also in Raleigh. Hope she stays more or less safe but that's all the sympathy I got for her. Luckily know no one on the coast

I wouldn't worry too much about the Raleigh area at this point. Since the projected path is now south of us, we should only get about 5" of rain over 3-4 days, and the winds shouldn't be that bad. We may get some flash flooding but power outages should be much less of an issue now. The coastal areas of NC and SC could see record rainfall and flooding though.

Yeah, I'm in Durham. I'm not even sure if the power will go out.

Correct.

And thats why to be honest.  Other than the costal areas there isnt anything to really much to worry, just a avg rain storm

The coastal areas though.  Remember how flooded Houston was? It was just a tropical storm when it hit there and sat.  This is going ti hit as a weak 2 and going to sit.  So id be real worried Wilmington through mrytle beach.
