Best thing is about CMC this season is the insane difference in yards per carry compared to the first quarter of last season, he mightve been sub 3.0 ypc at that point. Of course though, worse oline and Shula weren't helping him.

Yeah, been wanting to look up his stats from this time last year but haven't had a chance. IIRC he was near the bottom of the league in terms of either/ both yards before contact and yards after contact. Now he's among league leaders in both!

Too tired to look up tonight. Maybe I will find time tomorrow, but I'll be out of the office / away from my computer for much of the day in various meetings.

So I don't know if PFF classifies runs the same way, but I looked at the play-by-play for the CIN game on Pro Football Reference. Here's an example of what I found:

1 6:10 2 10 CAR 36 Christian McCaffrey left tackle for 13 yards (tackle by Jordan Evans)

This is the run that refers to:

mac-2.gif?w=412&h=224

This play does start going outside to the left with the center and left tackle pulling, but by the time McCaffrey crosses the line of scrimmage, he's to the right of the right guard. In the end, the left tackle's block is basically irrelevant on this play. So even as the season progresses and sample size start getting larger, the interpretation of the numbers is not so clear. The simple interpretation of numbers like these that you tend to see in the media is that if runs to one side are gaining a lot of yards then that side of the line must be blocking well, and you could make a case for that if you sorted runs by where the runner actually turned upfield. But if runs are sorted the way this one is, the picture is more complicated.

The defense over pursued, imo our OLine didn’t block good. CMC with great vision bounced back opposite side run was designed to go, ended up making a great run out of a blown up play. Cincy Def allowed CMC opportunity to make that play.

While I would agree that no one does anything spectacular on this play, everyone does their job (except for Kalil, who trips and falls). They don't allow penetration and force the Bengals to move laterally to avoid giving up the edge. The one Bengals linebacker who is free definitely could have played it better, but this was blocked well enough to still be a 4 or 5 yard run.

This kind of play is designed with the cutback in mind, so I wouldn't call this spectacular by McCaffrey either. In fact, I think he cuts it back a little too far. It looks like he would have done better to stay in between Larsen and Moton. It's still a good run, but I wouldn't call it great. This play is a good example of the power of teamwork: if everyone is good, no one has to be great, and you can still make a big play.

Those 2 stiff-arms (on 1 play) brought back fond memories of JStew.  He was considered, in his prime, to be a powerful tackle breaker, and IIRC was #1 for 2 years in a row at yds gained after contact.

And here we see his rebirth, only as a better pass catcher, on top.

Turner's intelligent use of this valuable asset will win us a lot of games.

He flat ran over Hardy Nickerson. Anyone who had any doubts about his "between the tackles" ability should just watch that clip over and over.

The Hardy Nickerson play is a statement by CMC.  One on One he destroyed Nickerson.  The best part was Nickerson wasn't being blocked, his vision wasn't impeded and was in perfect form to stop CMC yet got blown up.

Norv will have him over 1000 yds by end of season Rushing alone. Throw in catches out of the backfield he'll break 2K total yards.

    • I was playing around with the ESPN playoff predictor and it shows if 49ers and Rams finish with same record, the Rams hold the tiebreaker.
    • This is my thinking as well. Seattle played as good as they could on defense and Panthers still had a chance until those back to back turnovers.  I don't think the Rams played particularly well in their game against us, alot things went our way in order to win.  Someone pointed out the Rams were bad on the east coast road games and Seattle has been the better road team but they just fought a hard contested game against the Panthers, and now they travel to San Fran this week for their biggest game of the season to determine the division and if they are the overall #1 seed in the NFC or will be traveling for the Wildcard weekend.  If they lose they then travel back cross the country to play a team they've just beaten two weeks ago, not saying they won't be favored against the Panthers but the energy of hosting our first playoff game in 10 years along with the get back effect of having just lost to this team could be huge.
    • I don’t know about shadowing and all that, but according to this, whatever we are doing is working
