PANTHERS (0-2)

Previous rank: No. 16

Cam Newton doesn't seem right. That should be evident after watching Newton's performance against the Bucs in a dispiriting Thursday night loss. Newton repeatedly missed gimme completions with inaccurate throws and -- for the second straight week -- stayed glued to the pocket instead of using his athleticism to extend plays and improvise big gains with his feet. Most disconcertingly, his arm strength was suspect. This was most notable on a key fourth-and-1 in the fourth quarter, when Bucs linebacker Shaquil Barrett came free on a blitz. Newton saw Barrett, quickly loaded up and fired toward Curtis Samuel, who had gained separation behind the secondary. Newton's pass fell woefully short and far off the target. That was six points during Cam's MVP season in 2015. You wonder if the Panthers are worried that guy is gone for good.

    • No one way to do it, it does appear that with the bigger draft picks of the last 5 years…..majority haven’t steered clear of young QBs on the roster being their hopeful guy. Especially past their rookie seasons but even some the biggest ones have had it early.   As far as Andy Dalton, the two young guys he has “mentored”…..have had very rough NFL starts.  Which really ask the why the heck is Dalton here.   He doesn’t really check any box.  No young potential.  Can’t step in and win.  And his mentor track record with Fields and now Bryce is bad
    • I had thought the Panthers might let him play out his contract this year and hope he stays healthy. If not draft a left tackle and move Ekwonu to right tackle.
    • Frankly, if most teams in the NFL lose their starting QB for a significant amount of time, they're screwed. The fantasy is that one has a future Tony Romo or a Nick Foles that can carry a stacked team. The reality is that you might get roughly 3~5 games out of your backup before it all falls apart. Remember all of Peyton Manning's backups? Utterly terrible. Speaking of backup QB's, Raiders may need one. https://www.nfl.com/news/raiders-qb-aidan-o-connell-suffered-fractured-wrist-in-preseason-finale-expected-to-be-out-6-8-weeks
