Walter Payton Tribute

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Said it before: The first question I always ask when comparing two players at the same position is "What can one guy do that the other guy can't?"

Sanders could run around and past people, for certain. I always used to say they needed to make sure they never pointed the sideline mikes behind Sanders, because there was usually a trail of expletives in his wake. As far as real elusiveness though, Payton had it too. Granted, the way Sanders did it was more fun and exciting to watch, but that didn't really make it any more effective.

Payton, however, could also run over and through people. Never really saw Sanders do that. Defenders knew they'd pay for hitting Payton. He finished runs that strongly.

I'm a big fan of Sanders, and I hate to agree with his dad (who's a prick) but I do think he's the third best rusher in league history behind Payton and Jim Brown.

Craft a strong enough argument, and you might convince me to take Sanders over Brown, but not over Payton.

This is my favorite part of his game--I've only seen him in highlights, of course, but you just gotta respect a guy that fearless. I mean, the man ATTACKED people. Honestly, it almost seems like he would've rather headbutted them than try to juke them.

Which is another reason I'm amazed at his longevity. I mean, LT's practically done and he's thirty...Michael Tuner's exhausted after one year...and neither of them are as physical as Payton was.

My contention has always been that Sweetness was the best NFL football player of all time, not necessarily the best runningback, though I will definitely go to bat for him in that regard. Like Mr. Scot said, he could do it ALL- run around you, run over you, run through you... and look like a majestic stallion in doing so.

    • Just a winner? He went 6-9 last year. Just because a guy got carried to the SB by elite surrounding talent doesn't mean much. How did Nick Files pan out after catching lightning on a bottle?
    • Hurts is an elite threat with his legs though. He's gonna stress an opposing DC a lot more than Brock Purdy.
    • Um, no, just no. Bills, Chiefs, Chargers, Ravens, Bengals, Texans, Eagles, Commanders are 8 teams that it's not even a debate, they aren't trading their QB for Purdy. Patriots, Broncos, Titans, Giants, Bears, Vikings, Falcons are 7 more teams with QBs drafted in the last 2 years that also would rather stick with them than trade for Purdy as they all have more upside than he does. Lions, Packers, Cowboys, Bucs are 4 more that would likely keep their QB's as well, age aside for Goff, Dak, and Baker. Panthers and Colts are two teams in the same situation, QB's who have both struggled and shown flashes to where the teams probably stick with them because they drafted them, but in a re-draft of all QB's, they probably take Purdy over the guy they currently have. Jags, Cardinals, Dolphins, are 3 more with QB's who probably have a higher upside than Purdy but come with their own question marks, so debatable if they'd take Purdy over who they already have. That leaves Jets, Raiders, Steelers, Browns, Saints, Seahawks, and Rams. Rams would take him over Stafford for the future of course, but not for 2025, and I'd think the Seahawks would take him over Darnold, but honestly not sure if they would take him over Milroe at this moment as they really like his potential and have him for 4 years really cheap. That leaves 5 teams that I see who would absolutely take him over their current situation right now, and a handful of others who MIGHT take him over their current guy, a far cry from your 20.
