Smitty

To all the Smith supporters, I understand to a point your reluctance to pin anything on him and especially to think of him in another uniform. I'm not a Panthers fan, but I went through a situation as a Rams fan years ago....Eric Dickerson. He kept bitching and bitching about the team in the press, and then he did something stupid on the field on a Monday Night game and spent the rest of the game in a poncho. Couple of days later he was traded. If you think Smitty is the Panthers franchise...ED was the face, the body, the arms and the legs of the Rams at that time. So I get all that. I really do.

But there comes a time when pampering and catering to one guy is detrimental to the rest of the organization. The Panthers have been doing it with Smith and Peppers for years now. Difference is, Smith is another physical confrontation waiting to happen. He can't help it. It's just his nature. What I'm seeing...the comments about not being an asset, the tantrums in the Saints game, giving up on that deep ball late in the game (sorry, that's the way I saw it and I watched it several times)...it's just time for him to go. And you know what? He probably WANTS to go. Why else would you cuss out the man responsible for calling your number?

6,000+ post and your not a panthers fan? jesus man

also, you are blowing this way out of proportion, this isn't anywhere near T.O. level, Dickerson level, or whatever level. he yelled at a coach, big deal, alot of players do that.

this guy had almost 1500 yards last year, and after a few months, hes suddenly terrible? yeah right, players like smith dont suck overnight. mediocre players like jake do though, and its more his fault imo

We threw a little screen pass to Smith for like the 19th time in 3 games, and he got hit late out of bounds...after he gave Sharper a piece of his mind, he screamed toward the coaching staff something along the lines of "quit calling that stupid-ass play." And then later when he caught a big pass down the field when the game was essentially over, he looked over to the sideline after throwing the ball in that direction and held his arms up.

And thanks BigDogg.:D

Wow. I mean I am one of Steve's biggest supporters and have been for years but we just can't have any of that junk

So, what you're saying is you think Fox doesn't want to win???

Now i'm no big Fox supporter, and I'm ready for the change. But this statement is laughable. Do you think Fox wants to be fired? Do you think he wants to move his family to another city?

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and take your last statement as sarcasm rather than the uneducated verbal diarreha that it is.

YES, if not, I cant tell. Could you? We still have Jake as our QB

Oh wait a minute, for the past 2 games Fox all of a sudden put on his serious face. Wow

The team has been pampering and catering to Jake too. Far more than those 2 guys, and difference is, Smith & Peppers make plays. Look, I understand what entertains us, is your job. I understand you see things we dont and probably have a different perspective. Im just telling you as an NFL fan I DONT GIVE A f**k. I dont work around Steve Smith, I dont know the man and dont have to, so I dont care about that stuff. All I know is on Sunday the guy makes plays and is a leader for us on the football field. If he's out there getting chippy wit the coaches in a tough division game, I LOVE THAT! This team is as bland as a hamburger, and #89 is the A1 that gives us that flavor. #89 isnt the problem, the problem is our "you dont need an elite QB" philosophy has caught up to us in an ever changing league.

I don't disagree with your Jake point. The Panthers lost their minds giving him a huge contract in the offseason. And they should have invested a one or a two in a future quarterback years ago, although you'll get an argument from Fiz on that one. This is the second coming of 1983 when it comes to QBs coming out, and they traded that number one away. Unthinkable.

One incident, you're right. With Smith, it's been one thing after another ever since he's been here. And I'm just talking about the stuff that's public.

I understand what you're saying, but I bolded what is blinding you here. Smith in NO WAY AT ALL has been a constant complainer, nor has he been a press diva like T.O. He has indeed had his horrible moments, but his good (on the field and IN THE CHARLOTTE COMMUNITY) far outweighs the negative. I'm sorry, but there is NOTHING we could realistically get (other than a top 10 pick...which isn't that realistic) that could even begin to equate to what Smith has meant and currently means to this franchise.

Since I'm in a mood for being "brutally honest" lately, let's continue that here.

If Steve Smith didn't have a Panthers logo on his helmet, most (if not all) of us wouldn't give a flying rodent's rectum about his mentoring, his 'maturing', his community service or his apologies.

We'd look at his record (in game tantrums and incidents, punching out teammates, speaking to the press, etc) and we'd put him in the same category as Terrell Owens. Few, if any, would even try to defend him.

We're looking at it through homer glasses. Meat is not, and he has more direct experience with Smith and the Panthers locker room than anyone else commenting in this thread.

Saint fans defended Kyle Turley. Eagle fans, and later, Cowboy fans defended Terrell Owens. Chief fans probably defended Larry Johnson (up until today at least).

Think back a few months. Remember how many people downed Peppers when he wanted to be an ex-Panther? Now all of a sudden he's got fans all over. Why? Because he's on field wearing a Panthers helmet.

If Smith were traded, you can bet a significant portion of the fanbase would turn on him in a heartbeat. Deny it if you want, but deep down we all know it's true.

Meat is looking at it with objectivity. And let's just be real: right now, that can't be said for the majority of us :nonod:

Great post. Given the circumstances, Smith has handled it as well as one could expect him to. He's an elite WR who has 1 TD in week 9 of the football season. 1 TD!!! We dont have an NFL QB on the roster. Thank you Marty Hurney.

Peppers doesn't have fans all over because he is wearing a Panther logo only,he has fans because he finally stepped up and started playing!A month ago when he was slack,I wanted him gone, logo or no logo!

In short, Meat personally wants Smith of the team cause he has anger issues

I personally don't care either way. But when you show up your coaches like that...it's time to go. That's what Dickerson did in that Monday Night game years ago.

Interesting thing about his comments about not being an asset and his tantrum against the Saints....both times, the Panthers had either just won or were winning the game.

    • Let's be completely honest about this... Our WR room is AT and a bunch of question marks. Thielen is the only guy we know who knows the route tree completely, understands play calls and can regularly get open/beat close coverage when necessary. He's long in the tooth, isn't the speediest guy on the field but he plays like a pro, starting level wide receiver. Xavier, last season looked great at first, but man he kind of petered out down the stretch and would disappear in a number of games. He wasn't reliable on routes or getting open and where he was supposed to be a king at contested catches, he often looked a bit intimidated. I'm not saying he's a washout by any means. Anyone with his size, speed and catch radius could make it big in the NFL, but can he do it? He'll need to show more than he did in the preseason before we can really rely on him as a WR1 or WR2.  Coker was a revelation last season, he really played way above his (non)draft status and flashed multiple times in games and was a steady performer. What we need to find out, though, is whether he was benefiting from being an unknown that wasn't getting maximum effort from opposing DBs or if he was just outworking and outhustling everyone on the field. We should find out this season. We sure as hell didn't find out much in the pre-season (from him or any receiver or QB for that matter). He's still a question mark, but I think he has the look of the real deal. He might be this generation's next Thielen. Now, let's talk about Tet. High first round draft pick, first true WR off the board this year. Stellar career out west in college. Has the swagger of the WR1. And man, y'all are going to get mad about this but... he comes across as a mook. And in the pre-season he performed, well, not so great against poor opposition of second and third stringers. Yeah, he caught that one moonshot ball in the first game but really, nothing else lighting the place up. Rookie endzone drop in that game, too. He's still young and adjusting, I'm sure, but I was hoping to see something of a breakthrough kind of guy. I'm still looking. Hunter Renfro? Gosh, I hope he can make the team and make a comeback to his old form. It would be such a great story. But maybe neither one of those happens. We won't know until Tuesday and then, if he makes it past there it could be weeks. So, TL;DR: AT is all we can bank on right now. We couldn't afford to let him go considering the number of unknowns we'd be throwing out there for our QB, who himself is still an unknown. One thing to add: Our receivers coaching group has their work cut out for them. I hope they are up to the task, but the pre-season gave me little reason to believe in them. And I really need something to believe in here in Carolina.
    • Same I think Randsom is a baller..... hopefully we don't have to suffer through 4-8 games of Scott blowing azz to get him on the feild.
    • Linebacker is the biggest need - I hope we figure out a way to address it. Krys Barnes is the only one who even moderately flashed.  Super nervous about Trevin/Rozeboom as a duo (Still like Trevin) I'd be excited if we had a better vet to mentor Trevin.  Or a better younger guy to support Rozeboom.  They just don't fit well and it may be a big problem against the run, even with our DL much improved.
