Where's the Defense?

I think the D. needs to step up in the playoffs. So far we have just got

by. So lets hope they show up in the playoffs.

It's all up to Ken Lucas and Chris Gamble.

I'm not worried about the linebackers or the D-line once it's healthy.

Lucas and Gamble get burned too much, and that reverberates.

The defensive line really needs to step up their play, johnson leaves sacks on the field while brayton can be an inconsistent tackler

I don't feel like our pass rush from the front 4 will really scare anybody, if that can change we will be unstoppable

if our front 4 can get better pressure then the secondary will look all the better for it

It's all relative

They've been a little dinged and going up against some very good offences since the bye. None of the games have been defencive battles. I gaurantee the Bucs, GB, and NY didn't expect the Panthers could drop 28+ on their D's either.

When the offense throws up lots of points early it can sometimes affect the defence as the other team goes more wide open in catch up or shoot out mode. To illustrate my point look at the 03 SB, two teams known for their D couldn't slow each other down in the second half.

Anyway IMO the D hasn't really regressed as much as the competition has improved and the O has came on. I think they'll be good enough to get us where we want to be if they heal up over the bye.

Rank PPG YPG

1 New Orleans Saints 28.9 463

2 Denver Broncos 23.1 370

6 Atlanta Falcons 24.4 391

7 New York Giants 26.7 427

8 Green Bay Packers 26.2 419

14 Tampa Bay Bucs 22.6 361

Yea it is all relative, out of those six teams mentioned we are 4-2, now guess which four are out the playoffs and which two are in.

Defense has to get it together if we want to do anything the playoffs,

man it's like a tale of two seasons 1st half defense carried us until our offense found it's rythem now the defense is nowhere to be found!

What team have you been watching? The D hasn't carried a game all year, arguably against Oakland, but other than that they haven't been needed to "carry" a game the O has been putting up points all year.

The first half the Panthers played 3 top 10 O's and beat them all at home. Since the bye they've played 5 of the top 10, the only one at home was the number two O (Denver) and they handled them just fine.

They haven't lost anything or regressed, they wern't playing better earlier in the year, they were playing against worse O's, and had more home games.

As it stands they have no more than 1 away game, and will face Minnesota, Atlanta, or Arizona at home. The D has already contained two of those teams at home and played decent against the third in a road loss.

Y'all can get all worked up if you like, but I'm not a bit concerned about the D, if they're healthy in two weeks (most likely vs ATL). As far as the NFCC game if it's in NY I feel they match up much better if Kemo plays. If NY gets knocked off (by Philly most likely) I like our chances at home.

    • The term you're looking for is "malinger(ed)", and he didn't.  I'm not sure why Panthers fans act like jaded ex girlfriends.  The dude is clearly injury prone as his time in San Fransico also proves. It's not like he got to San Fran and stopped having problems.
    • My long and rambling post:   The guy is all heart, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he came back even better next year. He’s exactly the guy you lock up. The money won’t ever change the way he plays.  It was a big fumble, but what 1,000 yard back fumbles once in an entire season?  Pride. This team is FINALLY seeing guys who obviously take the game very seriously. Hunt, Chuba, Thielen, Brown, Horn (CB), Coker, Bryce (IMHO). Bye bye, Spider-Man. I don’t see these dudes being OK with teammates half-assing practice or in games. I can see Brown and Horn coming over to talk to somebody.  Good team? Ummm, maybe, but will still likely lose more close games than they win unless this last draft turns in to LOB part 2. That’s a stretch.  Pretty good/decent team. Yes. They finished the season as a pretty good team. I know I sound like a broken record harping back to it, but going in to ATL and putting a 40 burger on them en route to an OT win. A bad Panthers team would have had their brakes beaten off. We’ve seen it.  Rose colored glasses on and bonging a 40 of hopium: There are watershed moments that occur that change the course of franchises, both good and bad. If Fox doesn’t pull Rodney at halftime, the epic journey that was 2003 never happens. On the negative side, Cam taking that one hit from Watt was the end of any and all Panthers relevancy and we’ve been the biggest losers in all of pro sports as a result. Watershed moments. LOB draft. Vinny goes down and the goat is born.  Will the ATL game be the spark that this franchise has desperately needed? Could it be that they hit the mega million jackpot with Princley and Scourton as eat QBs for breakfast? Sure would be nice having 2 all-pro edge guys on the cheap for the next 4 years.  A lot of unknowns, but at least it actually feels  fun again.
    • Ok LT and Petersen are a cut above everyone else to me cmc and Faulk are interchangeable on this list.  though Faulk was better career wise
