Name Change?

Only black folk can cheer for the Bobcats.

tommy_robinson.jpg

The Bobcats are for and represent everyone in this area. The people who love them, the people who hate them, the people who ignore them. The bankers, the customer service slaves, the blue collar men & women, the soccer moms, the exotic dancers. Black American, White American, Latin American, Asian American, Indian American. Democrat, Republican, Independent, Libertarian, Wig Party. The militants, the hardcore conservatives, the I dont give a f*cks. EVERYBODY thats here, their jerseys say "CHARLOTTE" on them.

To my Bobcat & Panther brethren who insist on a name change. I propose a compromise. I say start a fund to put up the $12 mill league fee. Take donations, you could even put it on a local bill and tax Charlotteans for it. Hell, might as well surrounding counties like Gaston, Union, Iredell, Cabarrus, and sheeeeit York too! :D With that kind of financial statement from the public and the fans, Jordan would have no choice but to consider. I would personally lobby Mike to change the name and tell him the people have spoken. Next you vote on what it should be with the winner being the name MJ takes to his owner buddies and sets in motion the change. We could even start a drive and donate all of our old Bobcats clothes, jerseys, sweats, hats, etc. that would no longer be relevant to the poor and needy. It would be the biggest story in sports and would look very favorable on our state & region. So whatda ya say? ;)

Get over it, KT. Most fans don't like the name Bobcats because to them it represents Bob Johnson's ego. They want a fresh start under Michael Jordan, who you seem to keep forgetting is a black icon much more well known than Johnson ever was. And who you and I both know has an ego twice the size of Johnson's, but at least it will come with victories and playoff berths.

Those people are not very tolerant. In fact, Id say they need to get over it. A bobcat is a real animal and our logo is not a headshot of Bob Johnson. "Most fans" including those on this board, prefer Bobcats and care more about winning basketball games than our founder's "ego".

People who think they're entitled to a name change but wouldnt put a hot nickel towards making it happen have much bigger "egos" in my opinion. Meat wants a handout, a freebee.

We're already getting victories, we just beat the defending champs not even 4 days ago. We had a player in the biggest all star game in NBA history and are getting national recognition for the surprise year we are having. Bob will still be our owner paying Larry Browns salary and our players salaries when we make the playoffs in a month or so. Mike hasnt been approved YET and no money has been exchanged. I love how you act like Bob has no part in whats going on right now. I imagine when Brown steps down in a few years wont take you long to do the same to MJ. It'll be "up yours, Jordan...sell the team".

Yep, that's what I want all right. Wonder how much I could get from a name change? Cup of coffee? Morning paper? What? Wouldn't even get me either of those things? Forget it, then.

You know, I sympathized with Johnson for a long time when I worked with the Panthers. I wore a Bobcats shirt to work one day when they first started and was almost sent home. I figured "what's wrong with these people, they aren't even the same sport". I once did a feature on an ex-cheerleader who said 19 nice things about the Panthers, then at the end she said "and I'm working for a great man, Bob Johnson" and I got in trouble for that.

Then I heard about how Johnson went out of his way to distance himself from Richardson instead of reaching out to him as the established guy in town. How he told everybody he was going to do it the way it's supposed to be done, not Richardson's way. How he gave his team a cat name when Richardson asked him not to, and even made the logos very similar. Teams pay millions for those logos and for the branding, you know.

Add that to him having a naming contest, then saying "ah to hell with the fans" and picking his name over their choice.

If you would get your head out of your "the world is out to get me" ass for five minutes, you'd realize that there are legitimate reasons that people haven't gotten on the Bob Johnson bandwagon. You did it because of the color of his skin, and you have the gall to call other people racist.

And if the Panthers organization wanted to send you home for wearing a Bobcats jersey just because Johnson snubbed Richardson....

Well, guess who's got the ego there?

Sounds to me like both men need to grow the fug up. If what you said is true, Richardson is acting worse than Shinn.

Why would Richardson ask him to name or not name the team anything? What a bitch.

It wasn't Richardson. It was those working for Mark.

You wont even vote outside of your race. You want the Bobcats to waste millions of dollars changing their name so you can "tolerate" them. If anybody's caught up in "skin color" its Meat. And the funny thing is, you want it all for free as a handout without having to work for it or put up any money. I knew you were a liberal at heart Meat.

Yeah, I recognized that as an indulgence, and consider it to be a perception difference. The Flight is just a really bad name. Dragons are even worse. Griffons would be better. The rest of his rant was rather interesting though, and I'd love to know the true authenticity of it.

I tend to believe it though.

I do wonder what "Richardson's way" was opposed to "the right way" though.

    • I have not read the entire thread, and I realize this is fluff to a degree, but it was recorded in real time.  Here are 10 things that stood out to me: 1. Morgan wrote down (before day 3) the first three day 3 picks.  (Lee, Hecht, and Wheatley).  I was never fond of the Morgan hiring as GM.  I thought he was a lazy selection and I questioned his ability to match wits with some of the best GMs in the NFL.  Not any more. Morgan OWNED this draft.  He knew which players were good fits and when they would be bargains, and he got bargains.  I am thoroughly excited about every player. 2. Canales said (about Hecht, a 5th rounder):  "He has a real chance to start."   Morgan said the same thing about Freeling. While I do not expect either to start day 1, it looks to me like we drafted 40% of our starting OL in 2026.  I think we will sign Ickey to a deal and play him at RG, allowing us to escape the Robert Hunt contract in 2027.  Of course that is conditional, and Ickey could replace Moton instead, but if he fully recovers, we are looking at a better RG/RT than he was a LT--which was average.  3. When Morgan said to second-round DT Hunter, "Ready to play beside Derrick Brown?"  Based on personalities, one calm and soft spoken (for the Most part, Brown is) and the other talkative and openly enthusiastic, it reminded me of Brentson Buckner and Kris Jenkins.   4.  Perhaps the steal of the draft was Tennessee WR Chris Brazzell II.  Clearly the Panthers felt that they passed on him when they took Hunter in round 2.  They mentioned his skill set (able to attack on "all three levels.")  This sent me back to watching film. He has speed, hands, and he produced without a great QB. I think he could be great in the NFL.  When  5. Tepper was a bit more involved than I would like, but he seems to be very confident in Morgan.  If I were the owner, I would be doing the same thing.  Canales was also somewhat of a background character--everyone understood his role and stayed in his lane.   6.  I am also very interested in the quantitative analytics aspect of the draft room.  (something like, "He has a 94% chance of being there at pick 55, and a 38% chance of being there at 87). I would like to know their formula, because it seemed to be spot on. 7.  BPA?  Not really.  They had a shopping list and seemed to be targeting the players they selected. I realize other players were edited out, but I was impressed how they knew, by round, who they wanted and if there were multiple options sitting there, they traded back. 8.  Evero (I think) called Lee a candidate that would serve as the "#3 CB."  Morgan describes his size as a plus (Long). Strong praise for a 4th rounder.  If so, we have Thornton coming off injury who played well as an UDFA rookie and they will battle it out to become Jackson's replacement after the 2026 season, assuming the Panthers do not extend him (he turns 30 in 7 months.O 9.  I think we could realistically see every one of these draft picks play this season, and I believe most could start by next year--Realistically, Freeling, Hunter, Hecht, and Brazzell could all be starting or key rotational pieces this year.  I see Lee and Wheatley getting special teams reps and both could be used this season more than expected.   10.  Kuwatch seemed to be predetermined with the final pick, probably because he can add something special to special teams.   He and Bam Martin Scott will fight it out for the 4th ILB position, so it will probably come down to special teams--and Kuwatch stands out there.  Imagine an ILB with a 46.5 vertical (not a typo) on the FG block team.  Kuwatch has an 8.85 RAS score vs. Martin-Scott's 7.5.
    • They did mention Bain as the pick if he fell but didnt seem confident that would be the case.
    • Exactly what I am thinking.
