Name Change?

Yeah im bored with this name change thing. This argument is all over the place now. I want to know who thinks the logo looks like Bob Johnson? Wasn't this a rumor when we first got the team? I haven't seen anyone on here or anywhere else say the logo looks like Bob.

I think a name change is pointless at this point in the game... how long have we been in the league now? And we're already going to change the name? Retarded.

Bobcats has grown on me, but I've always had a bit of a bad taste in my mouth over it because I had always heard that Johnson named it after himself instead of going with what was voted for. Always seemed a bit self indulgent to me, but it's his product so he can name it whatever he wants.

And for anyone that's keeping stats, I'm a white guy who thought Johnson naming the team after himself was self indulgent but doesn't want it changed now... and loves Obama. Hope I didn't just make any heads explode.

A major mistake Bob made with the Bobcats was not scheduling a home game before/after every single Panther home game. Not many cities have the opportunity for a double header, and to not capitalize on it was just a bad decision, and one of the few he failed to recognize or attempt to fix. You have 50,000+ sports fans downtown 6 times a year, why not capitalize on that?

There should be a Bobcats game scheduled before/after every Panthers home game with enough of a time buffer for people to filter out and arrive at each game in time for kickoff/tipoff.

That's what Jordan can do for me as a fan.

I went to one of the few doubleheaders we did have back in 06. Panthers played the Giants and got their ass kicked (Weinke started). Then I walked over to Bobcats Arena and watched the Bobcats get blown out by 30 to the Phoenix Suns. It was very depressing. But I agree, we need more double headers.

This is Meat, he's not gonna provide a link. Dude regularly pulls stuff like this out of his ass. It never happened.

You never bring up any link based on some of your lies & excuses either, you hypocrite. I'm still waiting for your real proof that Jake only care about the money like you claim & never bashing Pep who clearly did it for the money instead. But then based on Pep being black & Jake's white, not surprise you always bring up "the white man is always bad & black are the victims" like you do many times with not bashing Pep like you do to Jake.

Oh, still waiting for link on you claiming we're never going to get a black QB 'cause the Panthers are racists like you whine many times whenever we don't get one. :dita:

June 11, 2003, Charlotte, N.C.– The National Basketball Association’s 30th franchise will be named the Charlotte Bobcats, it was announced today by team owner Robert L. Johnson. NBA Commissioner David Stern and Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory joined Johnson as the new team’s name, logo and colors were unveiled to fans at a team-hosted basketball street festival in the center of Uptown Charlotte.

“It is with great pride that I introduce the newest symbol of the City of Charlotte,” said Johnson, whose team will begin play in the NBA’s Eastern Conference during the 2004-2005 season. “Please welcome your Charlotte Bobcats.”

“With a name, logo and colors that are unique in the world of professional sports, the identity of the new Charlotte Bobcats delivers a strong message that professional basketball is back and here to stay in the Carolinas.

The Charlotte Bobcats logo depicts the spirit of the new franchise, illustrating the team’s aggressive hopes and aspirations. The logo draws on the distinctive ears of the cat, featuring the animal’s sleek profile as if poised for attack with ears drawn back and fangs displayed. The cat profile and Bobcats word mark are retained within the outline of the logo, with the name Charlotte placed across the top. A robust orange, referred to as Bobcats Orange, fills the cat profile and is the primary color of the logo. A rich blue, referred to as Bobcats Blue, along with black and sliver, joins Bobcats Orange in making up the four colors of the new team’s identity.

“The Charlotte Bobcats team will be as athletic, fierce and hard-working as the bobcat itself,” noted Johnson, who referred to the animal that is being used for the first time asthe name of a professional sports franchise. “No one wants to meet up with a bobcat in the woods, and that’s the feeling we intend to create on the court with our team’s new identity.”

Bobcats, indigenous to the Carolinas but infrequently seen because of their stealth and nocturnal habits, are fierce and swift. They attack with the aid of an expansive 10-foot leap, making them an ideal representative for Charlotte’s new NBA entry.

The team’s name, logo and colors were selected following a six-month process that included various forms of fan feedback, a series of creative phases and a thorough analysis of merchandise opportunities, game presentation possibilities and licensing considerations.

“This naming announcement is one more part of the new and exciting chapter that we have begun with the NBA and Bob Johnson,” said Mayor McCrory. “Charlotte is well-known, in part, because of our NBA connection and I look forward to seeing the new Charlotte Bobcats logo and colors throughout the city, nation and world, but most especially on the backs of the players who will call Charlotte home and become a part of the fabric of the community.”

Though much less common than they used to be, bobcats are still present in limited numbers in the more rural areas of Mecklenburg County where development is rapidly removing the habitat that bobcats need for survival.

The bobcats famous "house" cat cousin...

91for8.jpg

The Pixie-Bob is a unique breed of cat with bobcat heritage. On the North American Continent, in every geographical area where the Bobcat may be found, kittens are born in barns each spring, resulting from wild, domestic matings. This is the legendary ancestry of the Pixie-Bob.

Pixie-Bobs are intelligent and loyal cats with a doglike devotion that makes them great companions and affectionate household pets. This breed exhibits an unusually strong bond with their family and make excellent companions for children. These highly intelligent cats will train easily to walk on a harness and quickly learn to fetch and play other games. Pixi-Bobs are also extremely quiet cats with only an occasional chirp or chitter that they use to talk to their humans. This is a very adaptable breed that loves to travel and gets along very well with other pet animals. These cats are often referred to as "dogs in disguise". Owners quickly become enchanted with these beautiful cats and it is often said that there is nothing like being owned by a Pixie-Bob.

    • I have not read the entire thread, and I realize this is fluff to a degree, but it was recorded in real time.  Here are 10 things that stood out to me: 1. Morgan wrote down (before day 3) the first three day 3 picks.  (Lee, Hecht, and Wheatley).  I was never fond of the Morgan hiring as GM.  I thought he was a lazy selection and I questioned his ability to match wits with some of the best GMs in the NFL.  Not any more. Morgan OWNED this draft.  He knew which players were good fits and when they would be bargains, and he got bargains.  I am thoroughly excited about every player. 2. Canales said (about Hecht, a 5th rounder):  "He has a real chance to start."   Morgan said the same thing about Freeling. While I do not expect either to start day 1, it looks to me like we drafted 40% of our starting OL in 2026.  I think we will sign Ickey to a deal and play him at RG, allowing us to escape the Robert Hunt contract in 2027.  Of course that is conditional, and Ickey could replace Moton instead, but if he fully recovers, we are looking at a better RG/RT than he was a LT--which was average.  3. When Morgan said to second-round DT Hunter, "Ready to play beside Derrick Brown?"  Based on personalities, one calm and soft spoken (for the Most part, Brown is) and the other talkative and openly enthusiastic, it reminded me of Brentson Buckner and Kris Jenkins.   4.  Perhaps the steal of the draft was Tennessee WR Chris Brazzell II.  Clearly the Panthers felt that they passed on him when they took Hunter in round 2.  They mentioned his skill set (able to attack on "all three levels.")  This sent me back to watching film. He has speed, hands, and he produced without a great QB. I think he could be great in the NFL.  When  5. Tepper was a bit more involved than I would like, but he seems to be very confident in Morgan.  If I were the owner, I would be doing the same thing.  Canales was also somewhat of a background character--everyone understood his role and stayed in his lane.   6.  I am also very interested in the quantitative analytics aspect of the draft room.  (something like, "He has a 94% chance of being there at pick 55, and a 38% chance of being there at 87). I would like to know their formula, because it seemed to be spot on. 7.  BPA?  Not really.  They had a shopping list and seemed to be targeting the players they selected. I realize other players were edited out, but I was impressed how they knew, by round, who they wanted and if there were multiple options sitting there, they traded back. 8.  Evero (I think) called Lee a candidate that would serve as the "#3 CB."  Morgan describes his size as a plus (Long). Strong praise for a 4th rounder.  If so, we have Thornton coming off injury who played well as an UDFA rookie and they will battle it out to become Jackson's replacement after the 2026 season, assuming the Panthers do not extend him (he turns 30 in 7 months.O 9.  I think we could realistically see every one of these draft picks play this season, and I believe most could start by next year--Realistically, Freeling, Hunter, Hecht, and Brazzell could all be starting or key rotational pieces this year.  I see Lee and Wheatley getting special teams reps and both could be used this season more than expected.   10.  Kuwatch seemed to be predetermined with the final pick, probably because he can add something special to special teams.   He and Bam Martin Scott will fight it out for the 4th ILB position, so it will probably come down to special teams--and Kuwatch stands out there.  Imagine an ILB with a 46.5 vertical (not a typo) on the FG block team.  Kuwatch has an 8.85 RAS score vs. Martin-Scott's 7.5.
    • They did mention Bain as the pick if he fell but didnt seem confident that would be the case.
    • Exactly what I am thinking.
