Cuts - No Impact

you make an interesting point but not sure if i buy into it totally. If we had better players on the roster that could make an impact they would have been starting. Diggs was not given the job he earned it was was the best OLB besides TD.

I understnd that the cuts now force guys to step up but I have a hard time thinking that a back up is ever happy being a back up in the NFL.

So I see where your going with this but I just dont agree.

That's cool. However I am not saying they are better, just that they have a greater chance of impacting the pass rush, which is paramount in our scheme.

I also disagree that the vets were nec. the better players, but that is my opiinion. I think a lot of guys got by on mediocre at best performance, simply because they had experience over the younger players. fox has had a tendency to do this.

not sure how youre conecting peppers departure to letting guys go that dont do well in our system.

if guys dont do well in a system shouldnt they be let go regardless?

i think lewis is an ok pass rusher for DT... kemo is obviously the stuffer he probably wouldnt have played passing downs... and brayton is similar in that aspect.

The connection is that Peppers was one of the greatest DEs in the league. With him we could afford to have guys who were primarily run based defenders, because he could get pressure at will (sometimes), thus lessening the need to have that ability at the DT and LE positions.

With him gone and no way of replacing his impact in teh passing game by any one player, we had to focus on each DL position, in an attempt to get potential impact players across the line.

Note: "Impact" does not mean "effect," nor is it a verb used in replacement for "affect."

But on a side note, I am excited for this season. Yes, this team is taking a risk by cutting some of the vets they did(and even that is up for debate). This is a risk/reward league. You don't get anything but mediocrity from trying to play safe. Up until this off-season mediocrity was the reason for all the bitching in this forum.

could have saved a lot of talk by just posting this to start......

No, he couldn't. While you get the gist of what he is saying now, it's because you already have the full detailed version available.

Anyway, good post Urry, no matter what the trolls say. Your post is unique and one of the better theories.

I think Urry's post was good too. For far too long this defense has tried to put seasoned players into starting positions. Not because they were the best fit, but because they have been in the league for a while. While my heart bleeds Carolina Blue, Pep had far too long been deemed the impact player on our D, but was only consistent in playing when he had a contract coming up. His raw talent made up for the lack thereof for the rest of the D line. Urry's right. If some heads has to roll in order to find some young impact players, so be it. The mediocre at best Diggs and Kemos are gone. I would much rather find a new horse than keep beating the dead ones

    • Of course, everyone has film. That is probably fresh in their mind though. Our games with them are big examples of why they are in  the CB market so hard.   It is the study they do getting ready for the games.  Preparing to play against is a little different than just analyzing film in scout mode. Deeper dive. Then you are analyzing post game too.  This goes to why players often change teams but stay in the division. The opponents know each other on a higher level.  Plus if you lost to us, you used to get fired. Now you have to trade your first round pick. Moving up on the world.
    • I honestly can’t believe this team’s turnaround this season. It’s surreal. Figured healthy we’d be fringe playoffs and with another lottery pick could finally turn the corner, but we don’t even need that. This group is ready. We haven’t played remotely well the last 5 games and yet still blew out 5 bad teams by 16+ each game like it was casual practice. We had a few solid teams with Kemba and Big Al but this is easily our best group since the original Hornets moved to NO. Man, what a shift in culture this new ownership group and front office has brought. So damn happy to see it after years of suffering and consistently meaningless games in this stretch of previous seasons.   Only 2.5 games out of the 6 seed, although Miami, Atlanta and Orlando have been playing well too. Gonna be a fun final stretch, hopefully we can get a top 8 seed at the very least. Celtics tomorrow will be a good test. Would be huge to keep the road winning streak up against a very hot top team on the 2nd half of a back to back. We’ve played Boston pretty well the last few years with much of this same group despite sucking so I do feel pretty good about it. Kon is due for a huge game coming off a few cold shooting games (although despite the poor shooting he’s been contributing well with defense, assists and rebounds).
    • It amazes me how underrated Horn has become after he finally was able to stay on the field. Sure last year wasn’t perfect but he was still a huge reason for our rebound defensively and I’d say he’s easily a top 10 corner. You don’t want to see Mike Jackson as our top corner. Any player is available for the right price but I’d be extremely hesitant to move Horn even for a big haul from LA.
