OT Change could still make it to Regular season in 2010

Only four owners voted against adopting the new "modifed sudden death" format to overtime in the playoffs.

Two have already said publicly they will vote yes to adopt the rule in the regular season.

In separate interviews, Bengals owner Mike Brown and Vikings owner Zygi Wilf both said they believe consistency is important in the rules, and want the new overtime rule extended into the regular season.

Competition committee co-chairman Rich McKay expressed doubt Tuesday the rule would be implemented for this regular season, but admitted it will be discussed in May.

If two of the four "no" votes have already turned to yes, it looks quite possible to us.

I personally think all sports should have one simple playoff rule....for regular season and playoffs.

If it's tied at the end of regulation, you play another full quarter/period whatever. They do it in baseball and they play 3,000 games per season...I think they can do it for a 16 game football season too!

baseball isn't as physically demanding as football though. having said that, I agree with you, I hate ties and I want them to get rid of them until a winner is announced.

totally agree Cracka...but they also only play 16 games per season and have a week between...I know you always increase the risk of injury for extra minute you are out there as well.

That's why I like the new OT rule, it has the possibility of ending suddenly (if the D scores) and at the same time, allows the possibility that teams keep playing an extra 5th quarter of football until someone gets 6 points. I like it a hell of a lot more than the old OT rule.

    • And that makes you right.
    • Mel Kiper said he would retire if Jimmy Clausen wasn't a successful NFL starter too. Just because the experts make a claim doesnt mean it's true either.  Bryce may be a serviceable QB for someone. Serviceable QBs don't bring you a perennial winner or lead you to the playoffs over and over. Serviceable QBs also dont get 50m plus per year deals which is what a Bryce extension would look like.  The stats show he hasn't been even a serviceable QB in the 3 years he's been here. The eye test shows he hasn't put together 2 franchise QB salary games back to back in 3 years.  Complain all you want about people being negative, but people pointing out that Bryce is held to a different standard than anyone else on the team isn't complaining. It's stating the obvious.
    • We have big bodied WRs and 3 TEs who all have potential and each bring something different to the table. I never saw the need to go out there and try and find a new starting TE.  While it's nice to have a guy like McBride, Bowers, etc, I think a team's better use of the cap is by having TEs on rookie contracts or cheap vets, not having to pay elite TE money.
